Picture of hearth to give you color of brick, painted mantle & built ins, one wall painted...

beams as they are right now with the final choice for paint color on the wall...

ceiling, beams, ceiling fan, we'll be painting that whole wall the same color as you see above...
I've added a poll on the side. We're painting the family room, and have finished the built in shelves, mantle, and one wall. It shows up white, but it's more of a cream in real life. I changed my mind on the wall paint color (imagine that!) so we've been delayed. So here's the dilemna: the beams. Should we paint them white like the rest of the trim, or leave them the wood stain that they are right now? I change my mind every day (again, imagine that!) between the two. My husband likes the wood, he likes the way it matches the fireplace brick, but is letting me have final word. So, what do you think?? We're going to continue painting the walls and leave beams for the last. Please vote, even if you have never left a comment before...I would love your opinion if you were buying the house. Thanks, y'all!

  1. I say paint them. Leaving them dark just screams late 70's early 80's to me. Way too dated. But then again you have a knack for making a lump of coal look amazing so what ever you do it will look great!

  2. I agree with chad & amy plus 3 :) I think painting them would lighten up the room and update the look a little bit. But that's just me. I love the paint color you chose, though. I'm going to sign on and vote again.

  5. ok...I just posted and it was pretty incoherant! Sorry...the last delete was from me!

I like the wood beams. If it was me...I would leave them. But painting them would make them blend more with the walls and the built-ins! I can see why you are having a hard time deciding! The thing with wood (if they are real wood) once you paint them....that is a pretty permanent thing! It would be a pain to strip the paint off again!

Good luck....I am anxious to see what you decide!!!

  7. Hey Melissa---I lived in an apartment in Seattle with wood beams in the ceilings and mold growing on the walls and mushrooms growing in the carpet. The thought of those wood beams calls back very bad memories. PAINT THEM! Or not---it's your house, maybe you like mold and mushrooms.

  8. I say try leaving the beams alone first and see how it looks with everything else done. If you can't stand the way it looks, paint them to blend in better. I happen to like the wood look online, but things always look different in person. You house is looking so great!

  9. I am kinda torn. I don't think they look bad as wood, but I have a hard time picturing them painted. The wood kinda makes it stand out more...either way it will look good. You put martha stewart to shame.

  10. I would say leave them they way they are. I hate when people have wood in their homes and cover it with paint. I think it looks very nice and adds some depth.
    Enjoy!

  11. I would leave them! I'm with Hyrum :) Love natural wood. I'm too late to vote, so there's my take. You guys will bank on this investment with what you are doing! Good job!

  12. I'm a traditionalist and I die when people paint over the beautiful wood in houses. So I vote no paint. But the beauty of the thing is that it's your house. So do what you like. The next person will deal.
