3 questions to ask about your clothes, plus Old Navy sale!

I have 3 wardrobes scattered throughout our bedroom and it's driving me crazy! My maternity clothes, my regular clothes, and my in-between clothes for this wonderful period of nothing fitting! I'm really trying to simplify and downscale and wanted to share a little card I keep in my wallet. I cannot remember where I got these questions~I googled them and nothing came up, but I'm thinking from an old Oprah or something? Anyway, here are the 3 golden questions to ask when buying or going through your clothing:

1. Do I love this?

2. Is it flattering?

3. Is this the image I want to portray?

Aren't those great? I have a problem with buying things sometimes just because they are a great deal, instead of taking the money and investing in some great, classic, timeless pieces of clothing. I've had roommates and friends that are great in this department and I've always admired this trait so much. Their closets are not jam packed with clothes, but they have fewer pieces that they love with room to hang so they don't get wrinkled, plus they take care of what they have. Less is more, right??
So, as I head to the additional 50% Old Navy sale this weekend (call your store! Some have started~mine is beginning on Friday!!) I'm going to pull out my handy card and be very disciplined. Sometimes in the store, I'm trying to hurry and don't have a lot of time to decide. So, buy them at the great price, bring them home, look at what you have already and make the decision of what to keep in the comfort of your home, and then take the rest back.

I was so proud of myself that I just took a top back to Dillards that I got at their clearance sale~I loved the way it looked and fit, but I didn't love the pattern on it. Sometimes at great sales I get caught up in the frenzy of everyone buying something and just buy because everyone else is. So, back it went. It felt so good not to add something to my closet that I really didn't love.

Now, to decide on the flattering part, I wish I had my fashionista sisters here to help me with that one, but my husband is good in this area and I have learned not to cry when I ask him and he lovingly tells me it isn't his favorite or that it really accentuates my muffin top. Everyone needs a good, honest friend in this department.

As for the image I want to portray, sometimes I find myself wanting to get caught up in wanting to be up with the latest fashion trends, especially when they are on the clearance rack, but I have to remind myself that I want a more classic, timeless look.

I hope these questions help you out~I love the beginning of a new year for a fresh start~why not on your wardrobe?

Oh, and my sister, Kristin, just let me know about this coupon for Old Navy to sweeten the sales a bit! $10 off $50 purchase printable Old Navy coupon. Thanks, Krishin!! As always, I would suggest printing them out ASAP, in case they decide it's too good of a deal with the clearance and take the coupon down.
I want to talk about kids' clothes next...stay tuned! :)

  1. Great post! I think it is so easy to be sucked into buying something you normally wouldn't because it is such a great deal! I do that all the time.

I love Old Navy. It is probably my most frequented store (other than Target). Good luck with the sales!!!

Also, you should check out this site. www.cardiganempire.blogspot.com. This girl is a personal shopper and she has all kinds of ideas about buying for your body type. We had her come and give a presentation to the girls in our area about what is flattering and buying basics that can be layered, etc. She is very talented!

    Have a great day!
