dollar store version of the WS glass hurricane

16 November 2009

When I opened an email from Williams Sonoma a few weeks ago and saw this glass hurricane, it took my breath away:
photo from Williams Sonoma

Isn't it gorgeous? I loved it.
So, of course it was on my mind. I wish I could empty my brain sometimes, but alas, it was smashed in there along with other useful tidbits of information that I want to remember later, like did you know you're only supposed to run cold water in your garbage disposal to make it last longer?

Anyway! Stay on track, Melissa...

I was picking up some Christmas goodies at the Dollar Tree, and look what I found in the candle/glassware aisle:hurricanescandlesticks, and white candles.

Do you see where this is going?

First, remove the tags.

Then, take the candlestick, put some hot glue around the top rim, and place the hurricane on top of it, looking down into the hurricane vase to be sure it's centered.

I love that the Dollar Tree has these hurricanes! Then, take your white skinny candle (next to the saints candles in the aisle), put some hot glue or E6000 craft glue on that and stick it in the hurricane.

Then, go out and find some pretty leaves from a tree, or use fake ones. I chose to use brown, cuz that's what William used, and it's very Thanksgiving-ish
and let them fall gently between the candle and the hurricane
Trim your wicks down, light your candles,
and love that you spent only about 15 minutes, and $3 each, instead of WS $80 ones!

I'm not hosting Thanksgiving dinner this year, but wouldn't these look lovely on your holiday table? Or as a hostess gift?
All of the supplies were at the Dollar Tree, I noticed that Hob Lob had some glass candle holders that looked almost exactly like the Williams Sonoma bases, so for a few more dollars you could get closer to that look.

I can't wait to change out the leaves for red berries at Christmas, spring blossoms in the spring, or lemon leaves in the summer.

You could even get the glass etching cream from the craft store and make cute gifts for the family or monogram your own.

Off to Dollar Tree to buy all the hurricanes now!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Great job, they look beautiful!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Don't you just love the dollar store? They turned out wonderful. Great job.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Okay, I'm convinced now ~ you are a genius! I love this idea and what a great look for little money! I am definitely going to do this and just imagine what you could put in there for Christmas. Also, Melissa, I finished my monogram napkin plate {from your inspiration} and just posted it this morning.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I am so doing this! This is a fantastic idea....way to go!

    Nancy

    ReplyDelete
  42. Great idea. If you get really ambitious, you could using etching cream to create a monogram. I tried it once and it was a mess, but someone told me the key is to apply a smooth coat of cream and let it sit for a little longer than the instructions on the bottle suggest.

Now, I'm getting all excited. I want to try this!

    ReplyDelete
  43. AWESOME! I just saw those tall candles the other day and was standing in the aisle trying to decide what to do with them. Going back to get them now! Hoping the hurricanes are there! I didn't see those.

    ReplyDelete
  44. You are amazing! I love what you made! I have some from SL that I love, but yours are just as nice and waaay cheaper. Way to go. Good luck with your move, I love your yard sale purchases also. Marla

    ReplyDelete
  47. Wow!!! Unbelievable! You know, you can always have a giveaway...just sayin :)

    ReplyDelete
  48. Love this! You can even take it one step further using an etching product for the monogram. Great job!

    ReplyDelete
  49. What a great idea! And I love how you recreated these from itmes from the dollar tree! I think I am going to have to make these!!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Love it! Thanks for sharing.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Yes, ma'am! This is great! Very clever girl, you are. I can just see these on a Thanksgiving table. And since the hurricanes are elevated, you could twine berries or greenery or whatever around the bases and still get the full effect of the hurricanes. Neato.

    Thanks for sharing your brilliance!

    ReplyDelete
  59. An excellent rendition... good eye! I've glued candlesticks to glass plates to make my own pedestals and thought I was pretty clever, but this beats me by miles!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Those are fantactic! I am actually going to go out this weekend and create a pair for myself! I love how you can add different decorations between the candle and the hurricane and it is all protected by glass. I might try addig things that can float in tinted water....

    Great inspiration!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Your hurricanes are absolutely beautiful! There are so many crafts I want to make soon and the best part is all the supplies can be found at the dollar store.

    ReplyDelete
  64. What a great idea! I already have some of the hurricanes (purchased at the Dollar Tree a few weeks ago). Now I just need the candles and the candlesticks.

    ReplyDelete
  65. This was yet again another great idea! I went to Dollar Tree today and got all the stuff except would you believe that the Dollar Tree near my house did not have any saint candles or ones like you got! I'll have to see if WalMart has some or something. CRAZY!
They also had those mirrored christmas trees like the cool ones at Target so of course I had to snag some of those! I may actually have a cute house this year for Christmas...we'll see.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Lovely!!!! What a great reinterpretation of the original ones. They look great, and you can so easily change them. Fake snow midwinter, small eggs come easter, shells in summer. The possibilities are endless.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Um...dollar tree...here I come! I love this1

    ReplyDelete
  68. Oh Melissa, I just love this! I have some little acorns I have been trying to figure out what to do with, and these are just the perfect thing. Thanks for sharing!

  76. ahhhh!! ReplyDelete
  80. Melissa, I ran right out to the Dollar Tree because I loved this so much!

Do you know, they were SOLD OUT of the vases you used! The lady said they got in 10 cases of them and they sold like hotcakes! So, I called my mom and she ran over to her Dollar Tree. Sold out again!!! I think you created a run on these things! I am so sad!!!

    ReplyDelete
  81. wow! you're so creative! thanks for the inspiration, lora

    ReplyDelete
  82. Love this! I am going to make a couple this weekend!! I had to add a link to your post. :)

    ReplyDelete
  83. How darling! What a lovely addition to the Thanksgiving table....and could easily be switched out for Christmas....I do have a tiny suggestion....I think it might be better to use E6000 or another epoxy instead of the glue gun.....just in case your hurricane gets hot....and the glue gun glue would melt. It could be a disaster.... YIKES! I know....the likelihood is small... :-)

    Warm blessings,
    Spencer

  87. oh man!!! i went to dollar tree and found the candlestick stands, the "religious" candles and hurricanes that i THOUGHT you were referring to... but it really bugged me that the hurricanes were a bit shorter than the candles.... and i didn't remember yours being that way...

duh... yours aren't! but dollar tree didn't have any taller hurricanes! is this project going to be more difficult than i thought?? do i have to search the town and pay more now? erg!

still in love with the project, though!

bought enough for 7 sets... 2 per table plus one for the buffet on thanksgiving!

Great idea. I love switching out what surrounds my candles in my hurricanes. Sometimes I use candy (candy corn for Halloween, hearts at Valentine's etc.)

  118. Just thought I would let you and everyone know that The Dollar Tree no longer carries these hurricane vases, but Walmart has one that is a similar size (no flare at the top) for only $3, so while it's not quite as cheap, it is still very affordable. I believe it can usually be found by their floral aisle.
