my daughter wanted fruit pizza for her “cake.” We let the kids have a friend party on their even numbered birthdays. On the odd birthdays, we just celebrate with family. This helps us keep things a tiny bit more sane around here. june 2010 104 2 We keep it pretty simple: there is usually no theme or fancy invitations, I just email the moms the week before. She had 4 friends come over, they did water balloons, a treasure hunt (their goody bags were at the end, came back for lunch and cake and then we had some fun with flip flops. june 2010 130 1 june 2010 136 1

more on the flip flops later…but I just wanted to let you know we’re alive! I’ve got to figure out my blogging schedule for the summer…do you find yourself slowing your blog down in the summer or with more time to post?

  1. I love the idea of only having a friends party on even numbered birthdays!
Only two days since our school has been out and I can already tell that my blog time is going to be very limited this summer. It's probably a good thing...I've only been blogging a few short months and I think my butt is getting bigger from all the sitting at the computer!

  2. The flip flops are darling. How did you make the flower? I would love to learn how, if you're willing to give up the info :).

  3. Looks like summer has been super fun so far. We are still waiting for the water bit. It's not been warm enough here in Utah. In the meantime, we've been keeping busy and having fun at the park and doing some projects. My family lives in VA so we hear about that hot humid weather you have.

  4. Your pictures are beautiful! The colors are so vibrant.

We still have 2 and a half more days of school, so I don't know how summer's going to feel yet, but I'm definitely hoping for more project time!

  6. I haven't figured my schedule any yet. My kids last day is today and we are going to celebrate for sure, then the real work begins, how to keep them from fighting.

  8. Yes~I will try to get a little tutorial on the flip flops for Monday.
Yes, it has been very hot and humid out here, but as long as we do something with water or in the evening we're ok.
Annie~isn't that the trick of summer~keeping the peace amidst everyone being together?? :)

  10. What fun! I love these pictures of kids being kids.

Birthday parties make me really sad sometimes. I see parents over-commit themselves and spend SO much money on parties, when what kids really want is to hang out with their friends.

My middle son. . . NOT my oldest!!. . . turns 17 today. I remember how it felt to turn 17. How can it be that another one of my babies has reached that point?

Thanks for saying that you haven't yet figured out a blogging schedule for the summer. I really do want to grow my blog, and I know that what I'm doing right now is NOT the way to do it. But maybe I'll put "growing my blog" on the back burner for awhile. The days are really full right now!

  13. I do the every other year birthday thing too. Wow, I am not the only one. Now I don't have to feel bad. I wish we could be having so much fun. School is not out for another week and a half, and it has been raining for 2 weeks!!! COME ON SUMMER!

  14. Hmmm, I don't think I slow down too much on the summer blogging. I probably have more to blog about in the summer, like the fun trips and activities we do....definitely less about crafting and decorating though....no time for that! Looks like you guys are having a blast so far!

  17. Great photos, Melissa! :) LOVE the flip flop idea. A friend and I are doing flip flops as a welcome gift for the ladies on our discussion group leader team for MOPS. I haven't decided whether to go with ribbon or some other embellishment for the decoration yet. Can't wait to see your tutorial. :)

The days and pretty much the same here as when we are in school, so my blogging schedule stays the same. :)

  20. Hey girl! I have been out of town for 10 days and was without good internet connection so I am trying to play catch up. First, I think that that is a great idea to have parties on even years. That makes it a whole lot easier on you.

Second, I haven't been blogging as much since school got out. I moved up north in November and I was snowed in a lot and stuck in the house. With the nice weather and school being out, I want to be outside or reading by the pool. I just hope my blog friends don't forget about me.

    Happy Summer!

  21. Since I work at the school, I have so much more time to blog during the summer. I can get all of my thoughts down and organized.

    Happy Summer!

  22. I love the flip flops idea (and not just because I *heart* flip flops). I also love how green and soft looking your grass is LOL! Looks like a fun summer, so far. And yes, things definitely slow down blogwise in the summer.

  24. I find that my posting goes in waves no matter what season it is. Seems like the post are more interesting in the summer/spring, when all the projects are getting done! As apposed to the hot cocoa, another movie night posts in the cold months!
    Love that school bus picture!
