re-purposing framed prints

14 July 2010

Do you remember this big old print I found at a yard sale back in Texas? For 3 whole spankin’ dollars?

It survived the move, and we thought it would be perfect to cover up the electrical box downstairs.

Except that I didn’t love the print. So, you know the drill:
march 2010 043 1
Rip off the back and take out the print with your trusty butter knife, replace it with one that you love ,

and there you go. Jimmy and Donna (George and Mary) have their own spot in our home.july 2010 002 1
If you have some posters you want to frame, be on the lookout for some big, ugly prints in your thrifting.
If you could frame one movie poster to display in your home, what would it be?

  3. I know I've told you how much I love the Baileys and everyone else in Bedford Falls. So if I were framing a movie post just for myself, I'd probably pick IAWL. But since I'm not the only person who lives here, I'd pick . . . well, I already picked. We have movie posters framed and hanging in our media room. I just love them--they're beautiful art! And we couldn't choose individual movies, so we framed posters from the first movies of some of our favorite series: Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings. We do have one individual movie poster framed, though, and it's from one of our all-time favorite WWII films: Bridge on the River Kwai. Our poster frames are very simple--plain black--and I love them. But to have found a frame that big at a yard sale?? Good for you!

  4. I would frame Gone With the Wind - my mom had a cool collectible program about it, so it's sentimental.

    Cheers!

  5. You were so lucky to find a frame the perfect size to cover that panel!! Looks awesome and it IS a wonderful life!!

Hmmmm....I would probably frame Titantic. I never had a chance to watch old movies except Gone with the Wind and the Wizard of Oz. I have watched Titantic multiple times and since I am such a romantic, it is perfect for me! My husband doesn't understand but of course the only action and adventure is when the ship goes down!

  7. I recently repurposed a garage sale frame. You can see my blog for pics! I replaced a dated pic with one from one of my fave Etsy artists.

  11. Good Morning Sweetie...
Love the movie. You did a beautiful job of framing the poster. Much better than the old print. What a great way to cover the box. I love it.

Thank you for sharing as always. I love it when you do.

    Have a gorgeous day.

Country hugs and much love, Sherry

  14. Great job! Our box is in the closet, which used to be a built-in desk. We had a shelf just over the desk, and I propped a painting up over the box. You'd never know what was behind there. ;)

That's a tough question---maybe Gone with the Wind or The Seven Year Itch. :)

  15. Hi Melissa~
I'm a long time reader and love you! I don't have a blog though :( I do have 4 kids so I can somewhat relate to you.

I love what you did with the frame, however if you ever have a babysitter over or the like, let them know where your electrical box is before you leave. I was sitting when I was younger and there was an electrical emergency(fireman was there) and we couldn't find the box because someone had covered it up. Just FYI :)

    Thanks for all your inspiration!

  16. Thank you, Holly! I was actually thinking about that... I went over it with my kids and keep asking them "now, where's the electrical box again?" I need to remember to tell baby-sitters though. Great tip~

  19. Wonderful repurpose! I love reading your blog.

My movie poster would have to be Adam and his wife from 7 Brides for 7 Brothers (although, I don't know if posters are the same for musicals??). I love that movie so much that I chose our wedding date to be in June... you know, so I can always be a bride! :) Husband thought it was corny but agreed to let me have a go of it!

  20. Love your poster! Clever to cover the box, too. I would frame Audrey Hepburn, Breakfast at Tiffanys! She was so gorgeous and classic.

  21. Fabulous idea and I love your print!

  22. Gee, thanks for asking...I would pick another Audrey Hepburn movie, Roman Holiday, with that lovely man, Gregory Peck. Talk about romantic; the runaway princess has to go back to the palace and do her duty and give up the handsome hunk reporter; Gregory Peck. Classy all the way and what better backdrop then the Eternal City, Rome?
Oh, this was Audrey's first movie, made her a star.

  23. That is awesome. I was just checking out your site, I know I have been here before and added you to my favorites.

  24. I was debating over Breakfast at Tiffs and Roman Holiday too! I'm gonna have to go with Gregory Peck. Oooooh.

Love the re-framing. I bought a bunch at the Goodwill 50% off sale, but I haven't done anything with them yet. You've inspired me!

  25. What a fab idea! For me, I think it would be a toss up between Being There (Peter Seller's last movie-so good!) and Breakfast at Tiffanys.

  26. I just wanted you to know that you have spurred my garage sale itch again! It's been a few weeks since I've been and my husband was a little 'grrr' that I was so back in the mood! All thanks to your sweet little ideas!! Myself...and my husband thank you!! :)

  28. I have a Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs poster we need to frame. It's one of the first movies that my husband got to work on so it marks the beginning of him doing what he loves. Plus it will look great in the playroom. :)

  29. Great job. Awesome movie!

  30. My husband would say Scarface, I love Gone With the Wind (and do have it framed.) and my daughter's room would look perfect with The Little Mermaid. I think my relief society presidency would not approve of Scarface however....

  31. LOVE that movie! Such a cool idea to put a poster in your home! I've been following your blog for a while, and it's one I keep coming back to!

Thank you for pointing out that sometimes a butter knife is the best tool for the job! My husband hates when I use them as screwdrivers! LOL
