living room curtains + FABRIC!

23 November 2010

I have had lots of inquiries about the fabric for my living room curtains. I got it from Fabric.com ~ it is the Waverly Ellis Hemp. I cut the 54” width in half to make 2 panels out of each section. They are not huge and fluffy, but they frame the windows nicely and the price was right for $40 for all 4 panels!

Of course I didn’t sew. I just used fusible web tape (or stitch witchery) that you find in the sewing aisle at Walmart. Iron the tape onto the fabric with the paper side up:
lr curtain 1
Let it cool a little, then take off the paper (my favorite part)lr curtain 2
Then fold the fabric over the tape and iron and it “fuses” it all together. lr curtain 3
Crisp curtains ready to be clipped up! My husband thinks I’m obsessed with the word “crisp.” Crisp curtains, crisp air outside, crisp apples, crisp leaves, telling him he’s speaking in a rather crisp voice…..lr curtain 4    I had never ordered from Fabric.com before, but look at these fabrics! Pure loveliness.
Look for Home Decor fabric at the top in the blue bar----->then click designer ----->to see beautiful fabric from P. Kauffman, Amy Butler, Robert Allen, and more!

  1. Love them! Would you say the color tends to be more brown or gold? I am thinking about using that fabric in my family room.

  3. I have a question about your curtain rod. Is it longer than 120 inches?? Weird question I know, but I am having the hardest time finding a LONG rod and yours looks pretty long.

  4. It's 120" long...have you checked online? I hope you can find one. Maybe someone here has a good suggestion for that?

  5. Melissa, great curtains... I found my plain thick tan curtains at IKEA this summer they are so long. Check out Merete curtains at www.ikea.com they come in different colors and again they are Width: 10 5/8" Height: 2 1/2" Length: 14 5/8". I have them from ceiling to floor and I still cut 3 inches off. Check it out at www.bargaincornerdesigns.blogspot.com follow me there! I'd love to hear your suggestions and tips on my other projects. 6. They look great! Love the fabric. I've never used the tape that peels off, just the kind that irons down. I'll have to check that out.

  7. Burnett Family, I don't use curtain rods at all. I use cup hooks and it looks great, is easy and doesn't leave walls that need to be repaired. Here is an example:

  10. Thank goodness for tutorials like these--our windows are such weird widths/lengths that I put off shopping for new curtains (I think ours are from the 50s). Definitely on my to-do list! Any idea what the pattern in the top right corner is? I can't seem to find it in their fabrics, but I could just be looking in all the wrong places.

  13. Melissa, I LOVE that fabric!!! I want to go with a more modern look for the cafe style curtains I want to do in my kitchen. When I get around to it (probably after Christmas, ha!), I'm going to paint my kitchen, hallways, and dining room a really light gray. :)

  14. I am so glad there is a way to make your own curtains without sewing! I can't sew and don't have a sewing machine, so stitchwitchery (sp?) will be a lifesaver when I have a job and can purchase fabric!

  16. I love the fabric! How long is each panel? How many yards did you order for everything? Love the look!

  17. Just curious Melissa, how many yards to did you buy to make the 4 panels?

  18. Love these curtains! Perfectly simple solution for windows. I used Waverly fabric for my bench redo too....great stuff!

  19. My rod is hung about 93 inches from the floor, so I bought 6.5 yards for the 4 panels. Remember, I cut the width of the fabric (54") in half, so my panels are about 26 inches wide each, and about 92 inches long, after folding over for the edges. I also wanted extra in case I wanted to cover a lamp or pillow (I have plenty for that) I hope this helps! If you only want 2 panels and you'll cut the width in half, you just need to measure how long you want your curtains (allow for edges and decide if you want them to skim the floor or puddle at the bottom) and order that amount. 36 inches = 1 yard

  20. FYI - the "granville5" discount code doesn't work...I'm online right now trying to order. I'm still getting some great fabric at a decent price, but just wanted to let you know.

  21. Robyn~
It just worked for me...are you sure you're entering it correctly~lowercase and no spaces?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Melissa - yes, I entered it twice...said I have to make a purchase of $35.00 or more for that discount. I didn't want to buy anything else, so I just used the 20% discount you listed.
Thanks, I can't wait to get my fabric :)

  24. I love that pattern! I've been looking high and low for curtains to hang in our bedroom, and I might do what you did with the new sew technique so I can choose my own fabric. Thanks for the tutorial!
