lauren’s room:price breakdown

12 April 2011

Thank you so much for all of the kind words and encouragement about Lauren’s room. It is the guest room as well, so she gets kicked out when we have company…
april 2011 076 price I know you all love to know how much it all came together for, so here goes. We’ll start at the top and kind of move clockwise through the pictures. Most of the descriptions have links to see more…

Chandelier: $20 from Goodwill, plus $3 in pom pom fringe from JoAnns w/ coupon…more later!
Headboard: $10 off of Craigslist, we painted it white.
The lamps were from a yard sale in Lubbock and I added some Target clearance shades and white pom pom fringe $17
The quilt was made by my Great Gram Anderson. When my daughter said she wanted it on her bed, I did a little dance of joy. Priceless, but no money spent.
The bedskirt was a Target clearance find for $10. It was a king, but I just folded and staple gunned it to the bed frame to make it work.
The curtains are from Target in the 95” length and the sheers were one $5 panel that I cut in half, and then cut some holes in the top and hung with some white sheer ribbon. Since the rest of the room was so busy and colorful, I decided on fresh, simple white for the windows. I hung the rod out and up for a more dramatic effect since she has high ceilings in there.

april 2011 104 price The mirror! Remember the crazy mirror clearance at Lowes?? $7.50, baby! Even cheaper than the tag said. Spray painted Krylon’s sun yellow.
The dresser was $40 off of Craigslist, I’ll talk more about painting all of the furniture…

april 2011 078 price
We made the tissue paper pom poms using this tutorial. $5 for the paper. The box that they are in are a yard sale find.
The paint color! How could I forget that? It was actually an oops can of paint from the Home Depot for $5 that I lightened with white paint. The color we had picked out to use was actually a Walmart color called Sea Turtle (color place #335), so you may have luck with that one.
Grand Total for furniture + everything, plus we’ll throw in $50 for paint, etc.
$283
I’ve gotten some emails about HOW: where do I begin, how do you put it all together, etc. so we’ll be talking about those things, plus I have a little thorn in my side called THE KITCHEN.
Much more to come…thanks for hanging in here with me!

  4. it's incredible that you thrift so much.  i used to buy all of my children's clothes second hand, and then i got out of the habit - until recently.  i rediscovered the wonders of thrift stores, not just for clothing, but for home goods.  i've found such amazing finds at unbelievable prices.

can i ask what kind of camera you use for taking your indoor pictures?  they turn out bright and wonderful.  is there a trick to indoor pictures that i'm not aware of?  haha.

I knew I was forgetting something! It is actually an oops can of paint from
Home Depot for $5 that I lightened with some white. The color we *were*
going to use was Walmarts Color Place sea turtle, so check that one out...

Oh how cute! I would love to stay in that room as a guest. Sorry to kick your daughter out :) You got a ton of great deals. Those shades are really cute. I wish I had a Gram to make a quilt like that!

  13. What  a beautiful room!!  I especially love the wall color and the stunning quilt.  I showed the pictures to my 11 year old, as we're planning on redoing her room in May or June.  She has autism, and rarely exhibits much excitement about things, but saw Lauren's room and exclaimed, "I WANT that!!"  I'm still explaining to her why Lauren's great grandma can't make another quilt for her own bed.  :)

Also, I love what you did with your master bathroom.  IWe're redoing ours this spring as well, and I had settled on a light gray and white palate.  :)

Thank you for all of your wonderful ideas and sharing your home.  You're inspirational.

  14. Amy, thank you for this...your daughter is so blessed to have someone with
your attitude as her mother. That is so wonderful that she is able to ride
a bike. You'll just have to show Burke some diy decorating skills...send me
pics of what you do! :)

  15. Hi Melissa,

I commented the other day about your poster "She turned her can'ts into cans, and her dreams into plans" and how much that quote touched my life. I have thought of it all week as I watched my daughter try and teach herself to ride a bike even though she has some issues that should make it impossible. BUT - she did it!!! And she did it all by herself!

Anyway . . . I want you to know that I went to a conference this weekend for kids with similar medical disorders and met several moms with girls who were in "crisis mode" having just found out about their little princesses. I shared with them the quote and gave them my e-mail so I can link them to your blog and to your guest post with the poster. You are so kind for doing that.

I also thought of that quote all weekend as it applies to my life. I never dreamed I would end up with these special needs kiddos. But Heavenly Father has had a different plan for me. I look back over the past years and every time I have hit a point where I feel hopeless he has "turned MY can'ts into cans . . ." It reminds me of Proverbs 3:5-6.

I just wanted you to know how your post about decor (which by the way I LOVE) has touched the lives of many. I wish you lived next door so I could come drool over all your projects. I am currently redoing my whole house and it seems like nobody else over here in Burke, VA is really into redecorating.

    Thanks again!

    Amy

  17. Jenny took the words right out of my mouth....does the color of the walls come out true in the pictures? Or is it darker or lighter in real life? :)

    ReplyDelete
  18. I would say it's pretty true in the pictures on my monitor...I wouldn't say it's a dark color at all.

  19. This is amazing!! You find the best deal! I go to a yard sale and see junk! I just don't have the eye for "hey I could paint that and use it here..." Way to go! I can't wait to hear more about HOW you do it! p.s. I emailed you a few months ago about my oak table, chairs and hutch. Well, we moved in January and bought a new kitchen table and chairs, so now the old one and hutch is sitting in the formal living/dining room not being used. I still hate the light oak color though. I need to do something with it. I kind of want to get rid of it but I'm sure you could convince me otherwise. It really is nice sturdy wood. It just needs...something!!
