24 September 2011

An elderly couple walked into the lobby of the Mayo Clinic for a checkup and spotted a piano. They've been married for 62 years and he'll be 90 this year.

Aging *is* a good thing. And I hope I will be like the couple in this video...finding the joy, the hope, the beauty  in life...that's what I meant by the message. Thanks for your thoughts :)

  6. Melissa, thank you for posting the video and the poem!   What a treat!  It is very obvious that your message is that of being young at heart at any age.  I know that we can all think of examples of people who are older in years that have such a positive, inspirational outlook on life and in contrast  those who are younger that are consumed with negativity.   It really isn't about age it is about attitude.    Thanks for using your blog to bless and encourage us!

I feel like I must comment on the poem used in this post. In American culture, we have a problem with de-valuing older adults and the aging process. Although I think this poem was intended to support older adults, in reality it does the opposite. The poem puts all positive things, like faith, confidence, hope with "young" and negative things like fear, doubt, despair with "old". In America if we continue to associate aging and being "old" with negativity then we will never be able to overcome agism. Aging is a good thing. And the reason I know this is because God created us to age. Melissa, I think you posted this with the purist of intentions but I felt like I had to say something. I hope you understand.
