Under $10 Under 1 Hour Halloween craft

04 October 2011

You know I’m all about quick, easy, cheap craft gratification. This one was inspired by some plaques I got from a huge Hallmark clearance last year.
Let’s go~time’s a tickin!
1. Take a 7”X9”wooden plaque ($2-$3) from Michaels and spray paint it black (or use craft paint)october 2011 020

2. In the meantime, print out a Trick or Treat or Happy Halloween that I uploaded to Google Docs. If you want to design your own, I used this free vintage paper from Far Far Hill and The King and Queen font (free!) from Dafont.comoctober 2011 018 1

3. Cut it out, you can distress the edges if you want to with some Distress Ink, or with some craft stain lightly brushed on the edges.  october 2011 023

4. Mod Podge the paper on to the board. Can I tell you a deep, crafty secret?
I have never bought the real mod podge. Because I’ve only used it on ONE other project here.  Are you shocked??
I make my own concoction with Elmers glue mixed with water. (3 parts glue to 1 part water) I lightly wipe it on the back and on the top, then let it dry.october 2011 026
Instant spooky satisfaction!
You can prop it up, put a hanger on the back, or use a little easel. If you don’t have a wooden plaque, you could also frame it.october 2011 034 1 october 2011 039 1
You betcha it’s under $10 and under 1 hour.
Plaque: $3
homemade mod podge: .25
Distress Ink $6.50 (this is completely optional, or you could use some dark brown paint or stain you may have around)
My Total: $3.25
Wahoo! The party is tomorrow. Are you ready??
I can’t wait.

  2. So for the computer illiterate...I downloaded the vintage backgrounds, but now I can't figure out how to use them.  Do you have to have a specific program to use them in?  I just tried in Microsoft word and it wouldn't come up.

  5. Love it! I'm having a craft party next Thursday doing this project, but for Thanksgiving/Christmas. If you have any ideas on backgrounds or fonts for those holidays, please share!

  6. I love this craft, Melissa!  I can imagine lots of fun iterations of this--my wheels are already spinning with a Thanksgiving application of your craft.  You're so smart!

Hi Jessica! You can use it like you are doing a scrapbook page. I use Photoshop Elements, but Sarah explains here http://memoriesoncloverlane.blogspot.com/2010/10/i-caught-up-6-years-in-3.html how to use Picasa (free!) to use the paper...

    Good luck!

  8. So cute! And I'm loving your super secret tip about Modge Podge substitute... I've never thought to use an Elmer's mixture instead -- so much more practical for me. Can't wait to try it out!

Love it, Melissa!  I love the quick and easy ones, too.  I love the font you chose for these.  I am so glad you reminded about the linky party.  If I have a way to get internet tomorrow, I will link up.  I think I have a few that fit the theme.
