sleep? oh yeah, the thing I used to do before kids…

I used to have a wish that I would never need sleep, that I could stay up all the time and get things done while everyone else slept. I would never be behind.

My laundry would be neatly folded in the drawers. I would leave sweet notes everywhere for my kids and husband. I could learn new instruments and languages. I would be ripped because I surely would exercise for at least 2 hours a day. My legs would be shaved every day, my toenails freshly painted, and I would grow all of our food and store it like Ma.

My projects would all be caught up, and my emails would all have thoughtful responses the minute they showed up in my inbox. I would put cinnamon rolls out for the garbage men.

Pah!sleep

I’ve decided there is a reason God made us NEED sleep. I think He wants us to slow down, to rest, to look back on the day, and to have a fresh start the next morning.

To decide how to spend our precious 16 hours of awake time.

To look at those sweet sleeping angels who love you no matter how much you messed up today.

To be forced to choose the best things for you and your family among all the choices in life.

For the next 7 weeks, I am joining BlogHer and Best Buy for a New Year, New You program. They will send me a new product every week to review and to give one away to one of you as well. I will also be journaling in a weekly post how my health/fitness goals are going.

So…what does this have to do with sleep?!

This was my first surprise in the mail:

january 2012 056

A Zeo Sleep Manager: get a full picture of your sleep habits with this mobile sleep manager that features an adjustable SoftWave sensor headband to track sleep stages and measure REM and deep sleep. The SmartWake alarm helps you wake up refreshed and ready for your day.

In Melissa terms: charge the sensor, snap it into the head band, turn on your smart phone (this is my husband’s), download the free app. It should recognize the sensor. Put the headband on, and your phone will tell you when it picks up the signal (about 20 seconds for me) and then it tells you to go to sleep.

january 2012 039

The Zeo Sleep Manager shows you not only how much sleep you get, but what kind of sleep your body is getting and breaks your night into quarters.

This was a bad night: my 3 yr old woke up a bunch with a stuffy nose and coughing. In this quarter, I only got 9 minutes of deep sleep. Not good, Melissa!

january 2012 054

The cool thing? It will gently wake you up in a window when it’s the best time for your body to wake, instead of being jolted out of a deep sleep.

We all know sleep can make or break your next day, so it’s helpful to track the nights you are getting good deep sleep and then thinking about what made it happen.

Does caffeine make a difference? What time you exercise? A hot bath or shower?

For me, it comes down to this: I can sleep like a rock if my kids do. They think my headband is hot, too.

january 2012 051

I do have to say I’ve become a bit obsessed enamored with this Zeo. It’s something that I probably never would have purchased on my own, but I love to wake up and see how many minutes of deep sleep I got and when I got it.  My husband laughs at me positioning my headband before bed, but it’s quite fascinating to me~it makes such a big difference when I get more deep sleep.

AND of course...we’re giving one away!

Just let me know in the comments: do you have any tricks or tips for a good night’s sleep?

Good luck!

No caffeine after 6 pm or I will be wired all evening making it so hard to fall asleep!

I forgot what it was like to sleep good. With three small children, sleep is hard to come by. I would love to learn some tricks to a good night sleep.

I hate to admit it because I'm a night owl who loves coffee, but if I am to get a good night's sleep I avoid coffee and get my head on the pillow by 10. Oh. And my 2 year old mustn't wake up. These things rarely happen at the same time.

I would live to have this because lately I can't fall asleep until I'm to the passing out point and I can't for the life of me figure out why! I used to be such a great sleeper. Pretty much I could flip a switch any time any place and sleep. Fingers crossed!

My only tip is to not have kids :) just kidding, they are worth it! I have a 4 month old who is going through the famous 4 month sleep regression. I would love to track my sleep! Also, I would love to use this to do a mom study about cosleeping with an infant. It may allow you to not have to get up to her the baby, but I'd be curious to see how the quality of the sleep changes. Please pick me!

I want this sooo bad! :) My Landon keeps me up so much at night it would be cool (scary?) to see how little I'm actually sleeping. Ha!

Oh, and a hot shower helps me :))

My trick is to sweetly talk my husband into putting our 6 mo old back to sleep after a middle of the night feeding! :)

I never knew a product like this existed! So cool. I bet I get a lot less deep sleep than I think. My daughter is in bed with us and tosses and turns! Cool product!

I fall into bed exhausted around midnight every night- because of my night owl two year old and four month old. I rarely get more than six to seven hours of sleep total. I am so worn out though that I don't really have trouble falling asleep. :)

If I read for 30 minutes before I go to sleep it seems to relax my body, and I'm ready to drift off to sleep as soon as I turn off the lamp!

I read Lights Out that really helped me understand the correlation between sleep and nutrition. Now I make sure I am full, no going to bed hungry. I eat fat and lots of it and stay very low carb. I take my natural calm before bed and maybe take a magnesium bath. I will also use F lux (I think that's what it is called!) on the tv or laptop. It removed the blue light on electronics. I may read a book if I feel up to it. Our bedroom windows are blacked out with cardboard and we also use eye patches. Sleep in our household is serious 'bidness

Oh wow, that thing is amazing!! I would actually love to win it for my husband! He never ever ever feels rested. 4 hours or 12 hours of sleep, doesn't matter, the guy can always take a nap. Would love for him to try this out and see when he is getting solid sleep!!

My only sleep trick is praying. :) if I have things on my mind, I just pray and feel myself releasing them until I fall asleep! Oh and a new mattress doesn't hurt :)
