choosing exterior paint colors

--all opinions are 100% mine.
Okay folks, this is the part that I’ve kind of dreaded the most: choosing exterior paint colors. Maybe because we have never painted an exterior of a home before? It’s the first impression of the house, and we don’t want to be re-painting it anytime soon -- we want to get this right! Here is what it looks like with the siding and the rock:
 photo housecolors_zpsb7feff9b.jpg
I want to introduce you to a tool that has given me my confidence back in choosing paint colors:
Basically, you get to picture it before you paint it. The powerful Color Visualizer will turn your computer into a virtual design studio.
I uploaded the above picture, and then the fun began:
You simply browse through the color families and then drag and drop it to the outline that you want colored in.
 photo dragdropsherwinwilliamscolorvisualizer_zps8b5175b5.jpg
To make your own outline of an area, click on the outline button and then click around the area. It will automatically fill in the chosen area with the color inside the box.
 photo outlinesherwinwilliamscolorvisualizer_zps3f722ad2.jpg
It is quite addicting and gives a really good idea of what your color choices will actually look like. Here are some of our top picks for exterior colors with the trim in SW 7008 Alabaster (a gorgeous, creamy white!).
SW 7641 Collonade Gray: photo collonandegray_zpsf37f7298.jpg

SW 7031 Mega Greige: photo megagreige_zpsc926f63f.jpg

SW 7642 Pavestone: photo pavestone_zpsc61aeedc.jpg

I also tried the dormers out in all white: photo whitedormers_zpsafc4d417.jpg

SW 7018 Dovetail – if you want to go darker, lighter, brighter look down in the left-hand corner and it will help you out.
 photo swdovetaildarker_zps8e7b85b8.jpg

Here is one shade darker, SW 7019 Gauntlet Gray: photo swgauntletgray_zps4e63da1b.jpg

And just for kicks – think this would pass the HOA Architectural Committee?? :) photo parakeet_zps1beab750.jpg

I also LOVE that you can pull down different collections of beautiful, tried and true colors – this one is SW 7024 Functional Gray:
 photo swfunctionalgray_zps8ead6a05.jpg
As you can see, I’m having way too much fun with this. But it has been SO helpful in getting an idea of what our home will look like... I’m going to narrow it down to 2 and then go paint the samples on the house next to the rock to get the best perspective.
I have 2 questions for you:
1. What is your favorite paint color from all of the colors above??
2. Would you like to win a $50 Sherwin-Williams gift card? Just tell me in the comments: what room or area would you makeover with Sherwin-Williams?
Thanks and good luck!

  1. I like I like the gauntlet gray the best but I'm on a dark and moody paint color kick!
We're getting ready to redo our guest room into a "big boy" room for our son before our new baby boy is born in September. SW has gorgeous paint colors and I am hoping to use their paint for the room.

  2. I like gauntlet gray! I feel like it blends with the mountains.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Dovetail or Pavestone are my favorites, they work best with the tones of the stone.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Gauntlet Gray, but please paint the dormers! There's a house near me that left their two dormers white after they did a major renovation. They sided the rest of the house with a similar gray but left the dormers alone, and every time I drive past the house, I comment to my husband that I can't figure out why they didn't paint the dormers, they look like pimples on the house! (Not a flattering comment, but they just don't go!)

    ReplyDelete
  5. I like the Pavestone. And totally agree about painting the dormers the same color as the house…looks unfinished otherwise. Beautiful home!

    ReplyDelete
  6. I like how pavestone complements the stone on front of house.i also agree dormers should blend with the house!

    ReplyDelete
  7. I LOVE the Gauntlet Gray, and I also love the solid white dormers! It makes them stand out so much...such a beautiful detail!

  8. I like functional gray, and I'd paint my master bedroom!

  9. Definitely the guantlet gray for exterior. Thank you!

  10. Loving the Gauntlet Gray!

I didn't know that color visualizer would do the outlining feature! I have to try that out. I would love to repaint our main bathroom. It is boring beige!

    ReplyDelete
  11. I love the gauntlet gray. It just has a bit more personality than the other lighter colors, and it goes really nicely with the stone. Beautiful house! Love it!

    ReplyDelete
  12. LOVE the mountains as your backdrop!!!!! I like Functional Gray- or another gray- I just think it looked pretty with the stone. I would paint my front and back doors...both need updates!

    ReplyDelete
  13. LOVE the Gauntlet Grey!! I need to paint our entire lower level and this would be great!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  14. I love the gauntlet grey too. I need to paint my house again, and couldn't seetle on a color. It's a cape cod, so not to big or too much detail to worry about. I painted it red, which I love, but now I'm thinking gauntlet grey for me, too.-Kimberly

  15. What a beautiful home and surrounding area! I like the gauntlet grey best on your home. I would like to repaint my guest bathroom.

  16. Gauntlet Grey definitely makes the most powerful statement.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I would paint my living room for sure! It is currently patches of color samples :)

    ReplyDelete
  18. My son's room. He turns 13 this year and it's time for an update!

    ReplyDelete
  19. I would use it in the kitchen.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I like Gauntlet Grey. It looks crisp and well defined. I would repaint our living room that has two-story high walls.

  21. I'm gonna be the odd-man (or woman) out and say I like the lighter shade of Collonade Grey the most. Functional Grey comes in 2nd. Because it makes the rock stand out more. And I LOVE the rock. Also, I don't mind the look of the white dormers. It makes them pop too! So I'm totally going against the grain.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I like the Gauntlet Grey best of all of the options, it looks great against the white dormers. I'd use this colour in our 2 story entryway

    ReplyDelete
  23. My favorites on your house are pavestone and dovetail. We just did our house in Gauntlet Gray, but our stone is a little different. I also used Dovetail as an accent wall color inside our house and that is by far the color we get the most compliments on. Even though its supposed to be just a shade lighter than Gauntlet, I think it has a hair more gray to it. Gauntlet is a warmer gray. We did all our interior doors Gauntlet too. So just one question....when am I going to get to see your KITCHEN!!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. By the way, this is Heather, I didn't realize I was logged in under my husband:)

  25. My basement needs a makeover so badly. I would use the giftcard to paint the basement.

  26. We just finished painting the exterior of our home. Like, JUST. They wrapped up on Friday. I was really sweating about the paint color. I actually used this SW tool, but found it wasn't true to the colors, due to shade, sun, etc. What I DID find valuable, was keeping my favorite swatches with me in the car. Every once in a while (I'm a weirdo maybe) I would pull over and compare a swatch to a home or building and snap a picture. Often the colors that I liked were much darker or lighter than what I had in my hand. It was invaluable for me to see things all together. I would definitely recommend it. For example, the color we chose had some gold/yellow in it to match the orange/red in the brick work, but man was I surprised when I held it up to the local Outback Steakhouse colors. Totally gold! It's nice to be able to see the big picture, you know? Since we've got this new house, I sure could use the gift card! hicken at gmail dot com (The color we ended up choosing was called Irish Creme)

    ReplyDelete
  27. I like the Mega Greige (it looks like a brown-grey) as well as the Functional Grey. I agree that you need to paint samples next to the rock section of the wall.

I just need to start repainting the entire house.

    Liz

  28. Thanks Melissa! Aren't we spoiled with all of these fun giveaways!!! I cannot paint walls since I am renting....but I would makeover our living room tv stand! I just got my hands on an old dresser and can't wait to sand it down and paint it! Thank YOU!

  29. I like the Pavestone! We are building our first home now, so I have plenty of rooms that I need paint for!

  30. Since we've just begun building, I would it on every surface! :)

On another note, what is your stone? I love it.

  33. I like the Functional Gray. I painted my house a light gray six years ago and it still looks great. In my opinion if you go to dark then it fades faster. We are moving to Utah next month and we need to paint the whole interior of the house.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I also vote for Gauntlet Grey-- it will give your pretty house a nice, stately presence. My 13 year old wants to paint her room lavender, but I'm leaning more toward pale blue. We'll have to use the Visualizer to try out our favorites. Thanks for hosting this giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I like the gauntlet gray. I will hide a lot off dirt which outside is never a bad thing. It gives a nice formal look with the stone and looks nice with the stone and makes the trim pop. Good luck.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I like Pavestone. It makes the house look bigger and is a nice middle of the road color. Not too light...not too dark! I'm on team "Paint the dormers".

    ReplyDelete
  37. I like Dovetail. I would paint my bedroom.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I like the Dovetail. Have you thought about navy? I'm on a navy kick right now. I would paint my kids' rooms.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I would go with the Gauntlet gray....love the contrast with the white trim. I would love to paint my main floor...kitchen, hall entry and family room.

  43. I love the drama of the gauntlet gray! Our master bedroom needs a huge makeover starting with paint, of course. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  44. Pavestone! In the words of goldilocks...just right :) as for my house, the mustard walls in the master have to go

    ReplyDelete
  45. Pavestone is a winner. I'd paint my master bedroom, it needs a facelift! Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  46. Definitely Gauntlet Gray...it provides a beautiful contrast to the trim. I would makeover my living room. I am not a fan of the color we currently have.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Gauntlet Grey or Functional Grey are my two favorites. I am in the middle of remodeling our master bath & I would love to win the SW gift card for the walls.

  49. I like the Dovetail the best. Not too dark, not too light....JUST RIGHT! Beautiful snowy mountains behind the house as well! I think I would repaint my dining room. I have painted it 3 times in 8 years....I just can't get it right!

  52. Lovely home. I like the SW 7031 Mega Greige, best. I would paint my front door and window shutters.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I like the Gauntlet Gray! The darker color gives it a richer appearance to me. I had no idea that siding needed to be painted...I always thought that the siding was colored when they put it up. Maybe it's not vinyl you are using?
Anyhow, I am just about ready to pick out paint for my bathroom! We are in the process of redoing it and my shower curtain should be here tomorrow...then it'll be off to pick out paint colors! My big decision was yesterday...white bathroom vanity or coffee colored. Yikes!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Okay..the "just for kicks" green color is actually almost the same exterior color going on the outside of the home we are building. It is in a cottage community ...I am all about the color. However, the inside is coming all in builder beige....would sooooo put this gift card to fantastic use. Thank you for chance to enter. Can't wait to see your color that you pick !

I would use the gift card in TWO ways : re paint my girls bedroom from a dark, icky brown (their words exactly) to a light pink or lavender purple AND paint our bedroom a subtle grayish taupe. We live in 900 sqft so a little paint goes a long way for us!

  89. I think the pavestone looks great and really brings out the beauty of your stone as well.

We're ready to make over lots of rooms because everything is all cream from the builder. It's a gorgeous color, but it's a flat paint and it's so unforgiving I have to do constant touch-up painting or live with smudged walls. (I've been living with smudged walls because, really, who does touch-up painting on a weekly basis?

I'm ready to tackle the powder room on the main level with a soothing color.
