  1. Thank you for posting the video! I hadn't seen it. How can you watch it without crying? I don't think you can. Exciting news for us: we're visiting Normandy this summer. Jack has always, always, always wanted to go--it's a dream come true for us.

Hope all is well with you! Love you, friend!

  2. Thank you for the D-Day post. At age 30 my dad landed on Omaha Beach on June 7th (D-Day=+1). He was humble about it and rarely spoke about it or the war. He said "we did what we had to do". He went on to earn a Silver Star and 2 Bronze stars. He was eligible for a Purple Heart but refused it saying that was for those killed or seriously disabled.

After he passed away we found an article that was in the newspaper about him. He saved his platoon by running through 3 fields in Normandy under German fire. He burst through the hedgerow right into a group of German soldiers. One jumped into his bunker and opened fire. My Dad shot him, jumped back over the hedgerow, through the fields again under fire back to his platoon. They were able to radio in the locale of the other group saving both. He never got over shooting another human, but in the situation "you did what you had to do".

Do I think kids today could do what they did? Not at all. They had very little or no contact with their families for months on end,in fact his sister said they got 2 letters in 4 years. (They figured no news was good news during that time.) How many kids do you know that can put down the electronic umbilical device we call a cell phone. I see kids I work with that can't make a move without texting their friends for an opinion. Sad.
