a happy pantry door

13 August 2014

I wanted a bright, happy pantry door in our mostly-white kitchen. But yellow is tricky! At first I just grabbed some samples of some happy yellows that I thought looked good from the paint chip cards, but when I put them on, I didn’t love them as much. Holy brightness!

I went back to the Sherwin-Williams store to Chad, the friendly Provo store manager and he assured me that most people that try yellow think they know what they want but many times come back and say it was waaaay too bright. I know many of you love the bright (from the voting in the comments on IG!) but in the kitchen with lots of natural light some of them were too much for me.

Because of this, Chad suggested looking at some samples that were looking pretty muted to me, but I took them home and ended up finding my happy-not-too-bright-not-too-golden-just right yellow:

It makes me smile every time I look at it and helps me hide A LOT behind those doors.

Sigh. Yellow doors…are you a fan?

  5. I did a bathroom in a past house in a really pale, almost milky yellow color (that sounds kind of gross but it's hard to describe!) with white accents and really loved it. Yellow can easily become a really overwhelming color.

  6. How can you not be a fan of yellow doors?? My garage-door-to-the-house has been yellow for years, and it makes me smile every time I click that opener. That being said, you can go a lot brighter where you don't see it all day. Your "muted" yellow is perfection!

    1. What's up Rebecca?? For a second I thought you said my GARAGE door is yellow and I was like, send me a picture!! I should paint the door to my garage - what a perfect place to have some fun to welcome everyone home.

  7. Isn't that funny about yellow? I choose a yellowy color once that I liked in the store, but when I applied it at home, it reminded everyone of baby poop (you know, the nursing baby color). Blech. I read once (I think it was in a Martha Stewart magazine) that yellow is one of the trickiest paint colors because it absorbs and reflects surrounding colors. For instance, if you painted a room yellow that had a lot of windows with a lot of greenery outside, the yellow would take on a more green hue.

  9. I must have been channeling my "inner sycamore" because I just posted on this combo a few days ago - i'm using a gray/white/yello combo for our exterior and front door! We just got the ARB to approve the colors. Can't wait to get started (and i think i used one of the same inspiration shots - albeit, a different angle). Too funny. Love love the pantry door.
