I sanded, washed with TSP (very important step to degrease!, primed with an oil based primer and have put 3 coats on everything. I bought a really good paint brush, but had some trouble with brush marks. I would recommend a small dense foam roller and a small art supply paint brush to get in grooves and cracks. Painting the back of the cabinet doors first to get my "technique" down helped! I agree with the comments on using a filler. The oak grain in my cabinets is very noticeable . It took quite a bit of paint to fill in the tiny pindot holes in the grain. I am going to see how this paint job holds up before I attach the kitchen, but if I do the kitchen I will definitely be smoothing out the grain! And maybe renting a sprayer! Not sure how much it costs to rent but we have a handful of equipement rental places in town that rent them out.Erinnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4094626877865766804.post-66299393604099251652011-01-15T20:58:12.763-07:002011-01-15T20:58:12.763-07:00Also, word to the wise, BM's color sample mini...Also, word to the wise, BM's color sample mini jars and pints are done in their mid level priced line called "Ben". If you choose a color based on a sample you have painted from one of these sample options, be sure to purchase the "Ben" line and nothing else like Regal, Aura or Super Spec. They come out differently in the same colors. Speaking on his behalf, painting cabinets is a pain! He hates doing them and hates giving quotes on them because they are time consuming/costly to do. It's hard for homeowners to get past sticker shock. Just remember that most professionals offer a warrenty on their work, know the materials and application to do it correctly, get a discount from the dealers on products, and clean up after themselves. That's a lot of not just time but hassle that you save. And remember these winter months give you a chance to haggle the cost with a painter that may be costly but the professional that you want in your home.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4094626877865766804.post-1925303364260326332011-01-12T05:41:41.249-07:002011-01-12T05:41:41.249-07:00I love white cabinets. When we painted our cabinets, we removed the doors and had a professional come in and spray all the cabinet bases and interiors. With 3 little boys, they've held up really well! My big issue was that I didn't want to see the oak wood grain after they were painted-plus, of course, durability. We used a putty type of product called MH Ready patch to "fill" the grain. After sanding, you're left with a glassy smooth surface.
