First up was an old library cart I bought from the online classifieds for $15:
We talked about our entryway/foyer light debacle yesterday, but here are some of my favorites that I was considering:
1. Midtown $232
2. Piedmont $149
3. Valencia $84 --- see it in Chris’ home!
4. Antique Copper $160
5. Earling $145
6. Providence $115
7. Orb Chandelier $399 --- see knockoffs here and here!
8. Ashley $126
9. Edison $118
10. Filament $112
I hope this helps in your lighting searches! Do you have an entryway light that you’re drooling over?
A whole new world was opened to me when reader Caroline tipped me off to a great resource: used and returned items on Amazon. They are usually brand new or the box has been opened and you can get some steals! And I thought I knew Amazon in and out!
She said in the comments of this post: “Our dining room light was originally over $500 when I found it (and thought I can't live without this light!), but I was able to find a returned one on amazon for around $150. Such a steal!”
So, I kept my eyes peeled for items we still needed needed to purchase. For the master bedroom, I was looking at 2 oval Moen mirrors – they were $65 at home improvement stores and on Amazon. But if you look below you can find “used” ones which for the ones I wanted, meant the box was damaged but the product was fine. Many times, it means the product was returned.
When the boxes came, the mirrors were fine, and were packed inside another larger box with cushion and I was completely happy.
It may take some searching and patience, especially if you want more than one, but it could pay off! Just another little money saving trick to tuck in your home shopping belt --
** Updated: many of these are out of stock but we have an updated outdoor lighting post here **
Hello, friends! We have talked about pendant lights here, and sconces here, don’t you think it’s about time to talk about outdoor lighting??
As you can see, I love lantern styles, so I rounded up 10 of my favorites under $100 – most are about $50. I think they are just the finishing touch to the outside that say, “my owners care about me enough to pick out pretty lights – and I look expensive, but you’ll never know how much I really cost…well, unless you go look it up online.”
1. Barrie $52
2. Jamestowne $78
3. Parsons Field $99
4. Sutton 4 Light $100 (you can go smaller for less money)
5. Sea Gull $83
6. Brayden $55
7. Harbor $70
8. Transitional $56 OR see this 2 pack for $35!!
9. Castle Creek $40
10. Satin Black Motion $35
Which is your favorite? Or leave a link to one that you love.
I finally picked one out for our new home – do you want to guess which one? I’ll let you know in the comments tomorrow – I need to do a house update post, it’s moving right along!

Greetings, friends! This week are right in the thick of lighting decisions. I wanted to discuss ALL lighting in one post, but there are so many choices out there, I’m going to divide them up. Today, we’re talking sconces. I love sconces -- they give a little touch of warmth and thoughtfulness to a space, don’t you think? They can also be super expensive, but there are some surprising choices I am loving for under $50:
1. Cottage $30
2. Remington $49
3. Schoolhouse $19
4. Mason $42
5. Whitford $40
6. Zinc $20
7. Sadie $30
8. Archie $49
9. Portfolio $22 buy your own shade!
10. Polished $35
11. Arm Sconce $40
12. Dovray $20
What do you think—any favorites? We haven’t chosen yet, but these options are all in the running. I may snag #3 while they still have them at that price, I just have a thing for schoolhouse lights.
I love our electrician -- he walks around with us and plays devil’s advocate, which I appreciate. He knows we have a budget (can you imagine not having one?? You could be Veruca Salt all day long) and warned me about sconces, said they will be at least $80 a pop, why not just do the light bar above the mirrors? I actually do love people who try to save me money, but I also love splendid solutions that don’t break the bank. Bring on some sconces!
Thank you so much for the recipes you shared yesterday! My “to-try” folder is full, we will let you know if we acquire any new family favorites!
We’re picking out flooring this month! I cannot believe the choices out there, it’s can be very overwhelming. Our builder’s standard is engineered hardwood, so that is what we are going with. Real wood in Utah can be tricky with the extreme temperatures here and how dry it is, so we’re okay with the engineered hardwood, and it will help us stay in budget.
I want a classic, medium, not too shiny, not too light, not too dark floor that won’t show how dirty they really are, that are strong enough to withstand 5 rowdy kids, and clean up like a dream. Is that too much to ask? Here are some of my inspiration pics:
#1 this is my favorite: love the warm, wide planks. Love that butcher block island too!

As you may know, we are in the process of building a home. (yikes! still makes me nervous typing that) We haven’t even broken ground yet, and are waiting for permits to go through. (taking FOREVER.) This week we needed to nail down our exterior options so those can get ordered and it’s going to be LOTS of decisions from here on out.
So, I am deciding to open up my inspiration vaults (aka secret boards on Pinterest and inspiration notebook) to let you see what I’m drawing from. Now, these pictures are beautiful, awesome, everything I could ever want, but I’m also finding out can cost LOTS of money. And we are on a budget and really have to think about what to invest in now, what to wait on, or omit from the dream plan. I still love to look and be inspired though…

Would it be fair to say I adore dormer windows, white trim, and classic/cottage styles? And, I notice these all have beautiful old trees which we definitely won’t have right away.
What do you think? Which one would you pick to move into?
