I have slowly been trying to update my girls' room. I painted the walls Sherwin Williams Ivoire to compliment the yellow and green in the antique furniture. I took all of your advice and didn't paint it and decided to work with it.
We got rid of the bunkbed and remember the trundle daybed I found at a yard sale?
I just sprayed right over that bad brass with Heirloom White spray paint (by Rustoleum found at Home Depot), and used a Waverly comforter with green and yellow flowers on it. It's a bit of a pain pulling out the trundle every night and pushing it under every morning, but it really opens it up in there.
For the wall above the bed, I used the flowers from my summer tin (a bit faded now, but they still do the job)
a pair of sweet shelves from a yard sale last weekend (.50 each)
these tins from a yard sale in the spring (.25 each)
and this chunkalicious frame, also from a yard sale this summer ($3)
I spray painted the shelves green, the tins and the frame heirloom white, and then blew up a random photo of my girls at the park this summer. It is an 11 X 17 ~ I had it done at Sams Club and it was only $2.33 and I love it! I'm going to be blowing photos up all around at those prices..
Those finds look great in there new color and new spot. Great look for an amazing price!

I love that chunky frame, especially with the sweet picture of your girls. Perfect!
ReplyDeleteyou do such good work - any little girl would love that room and any husband would love that budget!
ReplyDeleteLOVE it!! Love those girls even more! Such nice touches you have added. What did you do with the antique set? Storage for now?
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely room for two beautiful girls!
ReplyDeleteThat room looks so sweet and peaceful. What bargains you found and what an even greater $$ total for the makeover.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun idea to use a trundle bed. Two girls... only one bed to make! Love your antique furniture too. I went back to the older post to have a look. And great decor finds. What lucky girls to have such a pretty room!
ReplyDeleteIt is sooo perfect!! Isnt too little girlish at all! Love the "bad brass" bed. I cant believe how great it looks and how much money you didnt spend. WOW.
ReplyDeleteThe Ivoire looks like it works perfectly in this room with this style going on. Love those tins you found ~ love 'em even more painted white. Very cute!

I have also just recently re-done our oldest girls bedroom. I have 2 daybeds almost identical to the one you showed. Same brass tops! I just wanted to know if you sprayed the whole bed or just the brass tops? Also, did you prime it? It really looks lovely! I must get some of that spray paint!

I love it, Melissa! :) My old daybed (also a trundle, don't you love 'em?) has the brass knobs on it. Mine is in my mom's garage right now, awaiting the time it can move into the guest room (after my girls become roommates).
ReplyDeleteT flipped out when I mentioned spray painting them. Have you noticed any peeling or problems with getting the paint to adhere to the brass? Just curious.
I love the room...such a sweet space. :) Visiting from Kimba's party this morning. :)
Terrific make over and the price was wonderful! I love what you did!!
ReplyDeleteWow, looks great! Thanks for the tip on the Sam's photo blow up...that's a great price.
ReplyDeletelove all your budget friendly ideas! I think I am going to do the black and white pictures for my kids' rooms
ReplyDeleteSimply BEAUTIFUL! Gotta love less than $10 decor. I just made over my hall for less than $1. But one item was a giftie! I am loving it tho and it makes me SMILE just thinking about how LITTLE it cost for the look.
ReplyDeleteGreat job. I have headboards similar to the frame of your daybed and did the same thing with spray paint. Isn't spray paint the world's best invention ever?
ReplyDeleteWhat a pretty room! Lucky girls! It looks great, Melissa!
ReplyDeleteLove it! Your girls are lucky to have such a pretty room. :-)

ReplyDeleteLove the daybed. Way to go, decorating a whole wall for under $8 (and it looks great. You did a great job. Love your site.
ReplyDeleteI love the color scheme, and I'm glad you posted your feelings about the trundle bed. I've been considering one but didn't know how much it would help with opening up the room. I'm glad to hear you're happy with it!
ReplyDeleteI grew up with a trundle bed, and I was on the bottom :) I didn't mind it, especially since I could tuck it away without making the bed... my mom would only bug my sister to make hers ha ha! And it is true, the room opened up.
ReplyDeleteThose are some seriously great finds. What a beautiful room they have.

My girls used a trundle bed from ages 3 adn 5 until they were 14 and 16 - the extra room is soooo nice and before long they can pull it out and push it back
ReplyDeleteThrifty and fabulous, just what I have come to look forward from you Melissa! I bet the girls love it too. It looks so elegant and like something they can really grow with.
ReplyDeleteLovely, lovely! Painting over the brass was an inspired idea, and I love the blown up photo. Enlarging black and white pics transforms them into art!

As always, love what you have done. Great daybed. It looks fab in the new coat of paint.
ReplyDeleteSweet picture too. Love using old frames in a fresh new way.
Hello sweet Melissa - lovin' your girls' room! My girls share an old trundle bed too. The trundle part is so heavy and is a pain to push under, you are right! You have given me the inspiration to paint ours! I didn't think of painting over brass, but I love the idea. I really like how you blew up the picture. How cute!

So cute. Those are such simple changes, but they look expensive. Really nice job!
ReplyDeleteIt looks so great. I always forget to look past the picture or painting in the frame at yard sales. Need to get better about that :)
ReplyDeleteTurned out gorgeous, I just love it! Saving $$ makes it even better!
ReplyDeleteOooooooohhh!
ReplyDeleteI am drooling over this room! I am trying to gather up things to redo our spare bedroom/office and want a shabby chic feel.
That daybed is exactly what we need.
Love it.
