If you have sinks that take a long time to drain after brushing teeth or washing hands, here is a trick to clear them up. It was from a book I got when we were first married called "Talking Dirty with the Queen of Clean." It's full of great cleaning tips and tricks.
Sprinkle equal amonts of baking soda and table salt down the drain. I try to do it without taking out the drain stop but if you want to take it out, just watch a YouTube video to see how. I would use 1 cup of each for a kitchen drain and 1/2 cup for a smaller bathroom drain.
Then, take a kettle of boiling water and pour over the salt and baking soda and let it work it's way through. Try not to use it for at least an hour.
I have loved this electric kettle we use for quick hot chocolate, mac & cheese, etc. Just be super careful if you use the stovetop and have to carry the water to the bathroom!
If it still seems slow you may have hair blocking the way and will need to use a sink snake like this one.
Here's to fast draining sinks! Good luck.

I have a bit of obsession with refilling Bath & Body Works foaming soaps. I love finding less expensive soaps and body washes to use when they run out that kind of match the original scents. You may have noticed that antibacterial soap is no more -- here is an article from the FDA explaining why good old plain soap and water is better. So you can use any liquid soap or bodywash and feel good that they will give you the same results if you wash with warm water for 20 seconds.
All you need:
* an old toothbrush
* warm water
* your choice of body wash or soap to refill
* a foaming soap dispenser (I always get the ones from Bath and Body works and choose scents that work well with refills)
Since we're heading into summer I chose a sweet mango body wash (from the Dollar Tree!) but I also love the scents from the Smartly line at Target. If you need more moisturizing you can definitely choose a more expensive body wash or hand soap.
1. Take the empty foaming soap bottle and fill it about 1/4 - 1/3 of the way with soap/bodywash.
2. Next, fill it to the top with WARM/HOT water. This will help it blend together -- cold water seems to make it separate.
3. Using the handle of the toothbrush stir together until well mixed. Don't shake! This does weird things to the dispenser.
4. Before putting the dispenser head back on, give it a good scrub with your cleaning toothbrush and hot water. It seems to collect dirt and grime with all of the use.
5. Put the lid back on and enjoy foaming goodness! This saves lots of money as it takes only 1/3 of a normal soap refill.
As I said, it's fun to keep your eye open for seasonal scents to refill as well:
Happy refilling!

Hello! I've been doing some spring cleaning around here. One of my most dreaded jobs is the tile in the master bathroom. I've established that it's something I would definitely do differently if we built again but oh well! All those little grout lines on those cute hex tiles are a pain in the rear to clean!!
I decided to try this recipe from an old Magnolia Journal (I love that magazine!!)
1/2 cup baking soda
1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide
1 teaspoon dish soap (blue Dawn is best)
Here is what it looks like before. Dingy, kind of yellow-ish.
And after!! It really lets the white come through.
I just mix it in a glass bowl with a lid and use a little tile brush to go to town on all of those little hexes. I love that there are no harsh chemicals or fumes.
Here is the progress!
I really need to get more rugs in there to protect these little tiles so it's not such a chore. Happy (?) Scrubbing!
Hello! This is just a quick cleaning trick we use to get our stairs spiffy. You just need a pair of rubber cleaning gloves!
Hello! Tis the season for end of school and graduations. The local women’s organization at my church (called the Relief Society) puts together some baskets for the graduating seniors filled with useful things for their dorms and apartments as they leave the nest. I always sign up for stain remover because this truly is the best, I haven’t found anything that works better and it is so simple to make!
The Dollar Tree had these cute aluminum spray bottles in the hair section. Don’t they always come through?? (* update on these spray bottles – some of them were fine, but others leaked! They are cute but you may want to go with different ones for durability, any spray bottle will work!)
Just fill them up 1/3 of the way with blue Dawn dish detergent and fill the rest with hydrogen peroxide and then I give it a good stir with a bamboo skewer. I’m not sure why it has to be blue Dawn but I’ve never questioned it because it works. I wouldn’t go with anything else.
Then I typed up a printable -- here is the link to the printable 4 to a page and the link to the printable 9 to a page. Feel free to print and use for yourself!
I cut them out ( I printed out one sheet of the nine to a page but only used six to leave more space for cutting) and laminated them with my handy dandy laminator that we got YEARS ago on an Amazon special – I have loved that little investment!
And just hole punched it and tied it to the bottle with a ribbon. It’s a perfect size to leave by the laundry to treat stains and a fun gift for a friend or someone heading out on their own for the first time.
If you haven’t tried it, I think you’ll love it!! ♥
The rug in our upstairs family room was looking a little dingy so I thought I’d share a little hack if you want to clean your rug but don’t have a fancy machine.
1. thoroughly vacuum the rug
2. fill a spray bottle with rubbing alcohol (you probably want to test a little area first if you are worried about discoloration)
3. spray a small area 7-8 times
4. use light colored microfiber cloth to rub the area and get the dirt out. I like to use the light colored so you can see what’s coming out of the rug. I love this big pack from Amazon. Keep using the rag until you feel like you are rubbing more dirt in than out, then use a clean one. I used 6-7 rags on this 8X10 rug.
The rubbing alcohol dries quickly and doesn’t attract dirt and your rug will have new life!
Happy cleaning!
What’s fun about doing dishes?
Nothing.
But what if you brighten your sink area with soap in pretty containers and you display it on a little pedestal instead letting them hiding under the dark sink? I totally stole this idea from my friend Robin’s instagram!
Tip: you don’t have to refill with the expensive stuff -- Dawn makes a clear dish soap too.

Welcome to day 30 of 31 days! I have been a crazy cleaning girl because I have been trying out the HomeRight SteamMachine.
Our headlights were pretty foggy and dull and I have seen headlight restoration advertised in kits and by pros from $20-$100, so I thought I would try a trick I saw somewhere -- toothpaste!
We just came back from a wonderful vacation visiting family with LOTS of driving.
Crazy hours in the car which came with crazy trip smells. We cleaned out the car today and took it to get a good car wash.
I had seen where people just stick the car floor mats in their washing machine, but I am pretty sure it messed up the balance on my old machine, and having them shampooed just seems to attract more dirt.
So, I saw a facebook post where it said that if I combined some baking soda and hydrogen peroxide into a paste, and rubbed it on my cookie sheets it would make them brand new.
Well, that didn’t quite work for me, but I’ll show you what did. I think the steel wool pads were the main muscle in this experiment. Here’s what I used:
Sprinkle baking soda on your grimiest parts. Then, a few dashes of hyrdrogen peroxide. You don’t want it too pasty, just barely wet.
Then, put on some rubber gloves because steel wool can do a number on your hands, take your steel wool pad and scrub, scrub, scrub! Sprinkle some more baking soda, a little more hp, and keep going. Cancel your workout today, because you’ll get it here.
But look at how much better they look:
Another trick I learned when I had to buy some parchment paper for a class project? It makes cleanup after cookies a breeze, especially for these delectable soft pumpkin cookies. We already made a batch. Fall, we are ready!

Here it is one year ago: remember hoarder garage??
Here it is after our purge (in the bitter wind and snow!)

Here it is after our purge (in the bitter wind and snow!)
It is all cleared out and it may not be pretty to you, but we love walking in here now, because we can actually walk in here now!
Before:

purge–verb (used with object)
1. to rid of whatever is impure or undesirable; cleanse; purify.
2. to rid, clear, or free
We have been purging. We took 3 of these loads to the Goodwill. It feels sooooo good. Originally, I was going to throw it all in the attic and bring it down for a spring yard sale. And I saw how much there was, and I thought of the sorting and the pricing, and I just wanted it out. Out of our house and away from me in case I changed my mind. I was just in one of those throw it out! I don’t care! moods, where everyone in your family is laying over their valuables to protect it from being thrown into the pile. (Except for my husband who was looking on with pure delight)
I’ll show you some pictures soon!

Last week, I was in Benjamin Moore talking painting kitchen cabinets and the guy suggested getting a quote on having it done professionally. He said it may not be as bad as you might think since it’s usually slower in the winter for painters.
So, we had one of the recommended painters come over and this morning he called with the quote and this is what I scribbled down:
Not going to happen. So, here they sit waiting for me to take them out of their state of oak.
I need a perfect white kitchen cabinet color. Not too white, not too cream…just a perfect creamy white. Suggestions?? I need to get going on this dreaded project….
Happy Monday~
