January Randomness: Paper Clutter, Canvas Bags, Cereal, Strawberries, Cute Bins, Cold
23 January 2019
* I have been trying to keep my desk area clear – it just helps my mind a little bit more focused (maybe?) Top tricks: go through mail on the way back to the house from the mailbox and go right past the garage garbage and throw most of it away. If it needs to be dealt with right away, I try to do it right then (like a birthday party on Saturday – make sure I have a gift or order one on Amazon, put it on Google calendar). If I don’t have time or it isn’t urgent, I just shove it place it in a canvas bag below the desk (this was just one my husband brought home from a conference) and leave it to deal with it on Tuesday morning because that is my paper day. That is the day when I pay any paper bills, cut out coupons I want to keep and put them in the car coupon organizer (mostly for haircuts, restaurants, oil changes), categorize receipts in our budget software (my husband is a financial planner so this has always been a part of our marriage), make appointments, etc.
The bag is a game changer though because it can stay under the desk -- or anywhere you want it – and it is the place for the randomness to go until you can deal with it and the counter stays clean. Or, if it isn’t clean, you can quickly whisk everything into the bag. Kids papers (papers they need to keep like for monthly projects or book reports) go in the wood organizer but they know to look in the bag if something is mysteriously missing.
* We need to talk about this cereal. We had a bunch of family visiting over Christmas break and thought this would be fun to try. No one liked it –like NO ONE. It just sat. How would they ever think this would be a good idea? Have you tried it?
* the car my daughter drives (2001 Camry named Arnie) would not start. We thought it was the battery and changed it out. It didn’t start right away but started the next day so we didn’t take it in. Then it wouldn’t start again and we thought it was because of the cold. I was getting it ready for AAA to come tow it to the mechanic and was trying to get it to shift to neutral and I tried again and it started so we drove it straight to the mechanic. They called back and said that we could pay $300 for a new sensor or we could just jiggle the gear shift a little if it wouldn’t start. We chose to jiggle and it has worked. I love honest mechanics.
* If you are looking for a great fundraiser – Valentine’s is coming up and the chocolate covered strawberries was a great success for my daughter last year. Tip: I wouldn’t do the the pretzels. I would just stick with the strawberries. Pretzels broke easily and took double the time because you do caramel first and then chocolate and then sprinkles.
* Look at my friend Jamie’s cute, organized bins! Who knew they could be cute and organized?? She used white duck tape. I kind of want to throw all of my ugly yellow & black construction bins out! She can make anything look good. ♥
* AND if you are in the mood for a gripping story – the COLD podcast has me hooked. It’s the story of Susan Powell – she disappeared in 2009 and her body was never found. Her husband was prime suspect but never arrested and it just gets crazier from there. It’s an investigative report with a fascinating, creepy look into the mind of narcissistic sociopath. Everyone needs a good listen while scrubbing the bathroom, especially in January!
Some randomness for you on a cold January morning. Thanks for sticking with me!
Hello, all! I don’t even know what to title this post because it is pretty random but my September has turned out to be quite random so it probably fits. This is when I turn to bullet points to talk so I don’t have to put as many sentences together.
* We are on fire in Utah. Literally. They are all around us and we have not been evacuated but so many have – the fires have grown to 100,000 combined acres in the mountains behind us. Don’t you wish we could transfer the water from the flooding in North Carolina to the fires in the west?? Here are some photos of the fires.
* Our garden was successful! Maybe too successful? We were over-run with tomatoes and peppers -- I posted an awesome pasta sauce recipe on Instagram that we made last week and I’m going to make it again tonight it was so good.
* I went to Nashville! I got to go with the girls on my husband’s side – our first sister trip and it was a blast. What an incredible city! Here are some favorites that we hit:
- Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage: for the history buffs! What a gorgeous estate, so well preserved and fascinating tour and ride out to the cotton fields and slave quarters. We loved the live duel and also thought the wagon ride out to the fields and lake was worth the extra money. We headed to Gondola House Pizzeria afterward and it was super good.
- Dinner & Bowling at Pinewood Social – I loved this place! Food was great and how long has it been since I’ve been bowling with a bunch of girls? Lots of laughs at this hip & retro gem.
- Biscuit Love. LOVED! We went on a Saturday morning and the line moved fast, it only took about 20 minutes to be seated? I still dream of the Lily – Lemon Mascarpone and Blueberry Compote on Biscuit French toast?? Everything was good.
- The Grand Ole Opry – of course. How can you not go?? We loved the backstage tour – seeing where they dress, the family room, fun facts and stories and you get to stand on the circle (brought over from the originial Ryman auditorium) on stage and get a picture. The really enjoyed the warmth of the hosts and variety of music.
- Gaylord Opryland Hotel – the most beautiful place and the cost wasn’t so bad when you split it up. Shuttles to everything and just beautiful to walk around, or head down to the pools.
Loveless Cafe – an iconic Nashville landmark! True southern cooking. Were were there by 8 a.m. and were seated right away and there was a wait by the time we left, make reservations if you can. What a beautiful drive to get there – gorgeous estates!
The Country Music Hall of Fame – this was cool but not what I was expecting for $28? Mostly just outfits and a few memorabilia items, maybe because there are so many? Elvis’s car alone may be worth it. I guess it depends on what exhibits they have rotating.
Thanks for sticking with me – we’re starting to turn cooler and I want to pull my fall decor out ♥
Happy Wednesday~
Hello friends! As we’re wrapping up summer I just wanted to share some random thoughts I had about this season:
* Did you know Amazon has super cute, affordable swimsuits! My daughter got so many compliments on this suit and people couldn’t believe it was only $16.99. Now, if you are looking for more coverage or support, this probably isn’t for you but for teens they are perfect.
* My sil Natalie introduced us to these long bamboo skewers from Walmart at our family reunion this summer. They are perfect for s’mores, only 99 cents a package and you just burn them or toss them when you’re finished. No messy clean up!
* Do you ever send notes to yourself? We use Google Calendar and I send notes to myself after an event or holiday to remember for the next year about what to buy, what not to do, remember this, etc. I laughed at this one when it showed up this week as I was admiring some white pumpkins that stores are already setting out! I have it set to come up at the beginning of a season – especially when I can’t remember what holiday decor I have
* This dessert from Our Best Bites is DIVINE. My sister Kelsey introduced me to it and it is soooo good, perfect for summer get-togethers.
* If you see something seasonal like patio furniture at the beginning of the season that you like, buy it! Then make up your mind later because by time time you make up your mind it will be gone. And companies don’t get more summer inventory in. I got some great stacking sling chairs from WM and decided we needed more and they were sold out everywhere, even in Montana and anywhere else I had relatives living.
* Hobby Lobby had these cute message boards on sale this week for only $15! (except they don’t have the $ symbol!) I couldn’t find them online but they were near the chalkboards in the store.
Do you see the black stuff on top of our door frame? It is also on our window frames – steel wool is the magic solution to stop swallows and small birds coming and building their nests on our porch. Last summer I had bird poo all over my porch, this summer we have had no birds.
I hope you have enjoyed some random thoughts and tips! Feel free to add any in the comments ~
Here is the long, drawn out story on the upstairs bathroom:
I wanted a fun, graphic design on the wall and I have wanted to stencil for a long time. Stenciling is by far the most economical bang for your buck on an accent wall.
I bought the stencil, I bought the paint, watched some how-to videos and was excited to begin.

It's been a long time since we’ve shared questions. Here’s some heavy duty summer contemplations as of late:
* Do all kids say nana nana boo boo when they want you to chase them?
* How come you feel like a better mom when the fridge is full?
While seeing all of the school supplies appearing on the shelves. why are they #2 pencils? Can’t they ever be #1??
* Does your stomach magically begin to hurt when someone is talking about a stomach bug going around?
Did you have any traumatic movies/shows from your childhood that you can still remember?
Here are mine – they still send shivers.
Watcher in the Woods – Narek anyone?
Scariest Little House ever. Sylvia and that clown mask. Nightmares.
Last of all: Why is summer going by so darn fast?
Cars?? What the hey?
We’ve had some interesting car experiences in our 15 years of marriage and some major car problems the last month, so I’m getting it off my chest today and sharing some advice. And money for cars affects money for homes, so it’s legit. Our policy has been to buy older used cars and pay cash and it has worked well until this experience so maybe this can help someone else.
Hello.
We are still here. Packing up, up to our necks in moving stuff: packing, taping, throwing out, selling stuff, wanting to take a torch to all of it and just start new at our new home. Moving brings out the best in you, doesn’t it? It truly makes me never want to buy anything again. For now.
I’ve been uncovering L’s everywhere. Landon was so proud that he could write the first letter of his name and he went to town all over the house. Part of me wants to make him scrub them all off so he knows we don’t do that, and part of me wants to cut the drywall out and take it with me and treasure those sweet L’s forever. Emotions are all over the map here.
When we got our appliances, the installation guy said, “Girl! what are you doing getting a nice KitchenAid dishwasher and then a Frigidaire microwave??”
It’s actually been an awesome microwave, no issues for the past 3 1/2 years, and I have loved my dishwasher.

He also told me never to use Jet Dry in my dishwasher, only Cascade rinse aid. I asked him how much Cascade was paying him :) He swore they weren’t, and he’d seen many a dishwasher ruined by it. Hmmmmm.
Another service man came to replace my sister-in-law’s garbage disposal and told her never to use hot water when running it because it wears the gears down. I looked in my disposal manual and sure enough, it said only to use cold water. This isn’t a paid or sponsored post in any way, just thought it would be fun to talk about as I’ve been asked how I’ve like my appliances. They’ve all been great, but I despise plastic bins in refrigerators. Grrrrrr.
I would love to hear~do you have any tips or tales from repair men/women? Do you swear by one appliance brand, or do you just go for what the best deal is?
Happy Friday! Here is a super fun contest as we head into the weekend. I can’t stop laughing at the pictures. I especially wish you could see the full cat in the Letter E picture!! :) A huge thank you to Brittany at Pretty Handy Girl for organizing this craziness. Good luck!!
Let's take a ride in that DeLorean parked outside and go back in time. Back to a time before there was Pinterest, Facebook and Twitter. Before chevrons, mercury glass and ombré were hot. And most importantly, before there were blogs! We're going back to when these DIY gals were worrying about how high they could get their hair, was there food in their braces and oh no...not another zit! Talking on the phone for hours meant stretching that long spiral cord beyond its limits and tying up the only phone in the house. Common purchases for these DIY gals may have been the latest cassette tape, neon bracelets, a swatch watch and a tube of clearasil. You wouldn't catch them dead in the hardware store, totally unheard of to the max! Are you there yet? Do you see leg warmers or jelly sandals? You're getting closer...the time machine has stopped so step out of your DeLorean and behold...the time before blogs:
Do you recognize any of these popular DIY bloggers? I don't know how "popular" they were back then. Do you think you could recognize them in High School, Middle School or Elementary School? For sure!
Top referring pins of 2012. It’s fun to see what brings people to 320 Sycamore from Pinterest. Sometimes the ones you love the most barely get pinned. And then other posts that you randomly threw out there one day are the most popular. Here they are~was one of them from you? :)
1. cough remedy
7. banana bars

Happy 2013!
I lost my fitbit. I’m so bummed. We went on a date and I could see the shape of it under the sweater I was wearing, so for the first time I clipped it on the waist of my pants. I have called and called, but nothing’s been turned in. Since it’s so small, I may try to go look for it myself in the restaurant, the 2 blocks we walked, the parking lot, the concert hall? arrrrgggghhh. If you have one, keep it clipped to your bra.
I attempted to make a headboard for our bedroom this weekend. It didn’t turn out exactly how I imagined and I may have shed a few tears. I hate wasting time and money. It may just need a few days to get used to?? let’s hope.
I have been to the store 3 times today. We’re having some friends over tonight and so I tried to run to the store before my husband left for work. I was in a hurry, so I forgot 7 things and then I had to go back this morning with the boys and just as I got them buckled in, I remembered that I forgot poster board. Back in we went. Kroger cringes when we come in.
I have 8 cloth grocery bags in my van. I think I have remembered to bring them into the store ONCE. How do you remember?
my husband’s car alarm started going off this morning and would not turn off, even when he started the engine. SO LOUD. So I googled it, couldn’t find anything, so I called the mechanic and he said (yelled) over the alarm, close all the doors, lock them, then unlock them. it finally worked. Sorry neighborhood. Thank you, mechanic.
I had to throw away my favorite paintbrush because I forgot to wash it after using it. Unfortunately, this ain’t the first time that has happened.
Lauren asked me to switch her gym uniform from the washer to the dryer last night before she went to bed. Totally spaced it, so she had to stuff damp gym clothes in her backpack this morning. I told her to hang them in her locker and hopefully they can semi-dry before 5th period??
We put some home videos on dvd this weekend and at one point, the video camera was left on and it got me yelling at my boys for jumping off the couch in their shoes. The kids laughed, but I wanted to cry. It sounded so mean. Just what I want to remember…would it be awful of me to take it off or should I leave it on for reality sake?
I realize none of these are horrible, drastic events….just one of those mornings.
Put that in your pipe and smoke it. Love that line.
I better get my buns in gear~this house needs some major attention after the weekend. I’m going to set the timer for 45 minutes and just GO…things always seem to look up when you have a clean kitchen, right? Right??
Hopefully your Monday is AWESOME.
Well, of course it snowed.
Because Christmas is over, and it would make too much sense to snow before Christmas??
I’m a little bitter today…because it’s BITTER cold outside, I’m still trying to get Christmas down, my new years resolutions aren’t going so hot, and we started on the upstairs’ bathrooms over the break and they are just sitting waiting for me to finish peeling the wallpaper borders.
Blasted projects~who thought they were a good idea anyway?
My posts with the most hits
according to the number of hits via google Analytics (along with my commentary!)
1. The $3 W.Sonoma knockoff glass hurricane (this was the favorite last year as well)
2. Some awesome tips (this was a random, quick Friday post. I have a blog notebook that I scribble down blog post ideas in, and these were a few I picked. Who knew??)
3. Inspire Me (you love BLOGS?)
4. Parade of Homes 2011 (you love snooping in people’s homes?)
5. Autumn wreath (you love another WS knockoff?)
1. How do you say thank you for your freedom? It seems so little for such a huge blessing, but thank you to all veterans, active duty military, and their families. Happy Veteran’s Day~
I loved this video:
2. A little history from my history teacher older brother in an email this morning: World War I ended with an Armistice on November 11, 1918, which went into effect at 11:00 am-the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of the year. Armistice Day is still observed on November 11 of each year, although it is now called Veterans Day in the United States and Remembrance Day in the Commonwealth of Nations and parts of Europe.

It’s 11.1.11.~don’t you love dates like this? Can you hardly wait for 11.11.11?? Rabbit.
So…we are having a major halloween hangover,
still in our pjs and the house is a mess, but I’ve made a goal for myself for this month:
finish the blasted kitchen.
Well, you may not think they are awesome, but I sure did. Just a few random things that I didn’t know (you probably already know) but just in case, I’ve gotta share:
1. I discovered last winter that most of our Wii games were horribly scratched and wouldn’t play. We laid down the law and told the kids that if they wanted to play, they would have to pay for new games with their own money. (do your kids put the discs back when they are finished?!? arghhhh…such a pet peeve of mine) My daughter asked if anybody fixed wii games..and I didn’t know. We googled around a bit and found Azura Disc and figured it was worth a try? So, we sent in 7 discs, they were able to make 6 as good as new for around $27 total shipped. It was like Christmas when they got the games back. I have no affiliation whatsoever with them…but they are my kids’ new best friends!
My mom, Kristin, and I found a great little stack of Golden Books at a yard sale in Montana for 10 cents each. I was thrilled that one of my favorites was in that stack:
I got hit with a stomach bug on the 3rd. NOT fun. We did manage to drive up and visit with some family, and make some easy strawberries (idea from Pinterest!)
