garage door makeover

30 June 2011

There was nothing wrong with our garage: it was white, outside house 1with classic sunburst inserts in the windows.

Until a baseball went through one and we had (forgot to take a picture!) a big old hole for awhile. I checked on getting a new insert and was told I had to buy them in a set….

Sooooo, I took the opportunity to look into some different inserts :)
I ordered these ones from Ebay because they were cheaper ($84) than anyplace else I checked out. (and I realize I have been talking a lot about them lately, but I we have no deal going on here)

To replace them, you just take the screws off the inside of the garage window and pop the new insert in (make sure you order the right size for your garage door) Oh, wait! And also have someone on the outside of the garage door in case your window falls out that way and smashes to pieces on your driveway and you have to go get a new piece of glass cut. Just sayin’….june 2011 002 1
While I was at it, I ordered some new hardware for the garage ($28) and lanterns to match the front porch…($54 for both)june 2011 084 2
 june 2011 082 2 And it’s like a new garage for around $160!
The hardware just screws right into the garage door, although I think you can also get magnetic now if you are worried about putting holes in your garage door…

a quick update in less than 2 hours. wahoo!
We painted the shutters black to match the front door~I’ll try to get a picture to show you the whole sha-bang.
Can you believe the difference a garage door makes? I was watching Nate and the real estate expert said garage doors are one of the best updates you can make to your home to get the most bang for your buck. And sometimes, it just means getting out your drill, adding new window inserts and adding some black metal thingy-s. You could SO do this!

That is a lot of bang for your buck!  Love the new look.  Makes me wish I had a garage so I could do that!

  3. Melissa, I love the changes to your garage door!  I checked the link on Ebay and it said the windows are only for CHI garage doors.  Is that what you have?  I don't believe mine is CHI.  I wonder if they fit the average garage door.  Thanks, Karen

We have the same light fixtures! We swaped out the gold ones that were from the pervious owners.
    Thanks for sharing.

Carriage house door accents! That's what they are called...not black metal

  8. I have read your blog for a while now and have not ever left a comment.  I love everything you do, and these simple changes you made to the front of your house are awesome!  Little things can make such a huge difference!  Good work and fantastic curb appeal:)  And are you like me and drive by houses and say, "now if they just did this or that the house would be so much cuter?"  haha  Great job and I love your blog!

the new hardware makes a huge difference! I saw on a message board where a lady didn't have those window inserts, so she PAINTED them on with gloss black paint--just taped off rectangles and it totally looks like windows! She added hardware like yours and also painted a thin stripe of black down the center (to look like the crack between doors) and I'll tell you, it totally looks like carriage style doors!
