build me a home: cabinet style edition

07 January 2014

Happy 2014! The break went by way too fast for me. In fact, I *assumed* Christmas break lasts until the Monday after New Years, right? Wrong! We got the automated phone call from the school on Thursday morning wondering where our kids were when we were lounging around in our pajamas watching dumb youtube videos and making some important cleaning/ laundry plans for the day. I had to double check the school website to make sure it wasn’t a cruel joke and then scrambled to get everyone dressed, somewhat presentable and out the door, kind of like a Home Alone “we slept in!” We are still adjusting to this place.
We gorged ourselves in December with holiday treats and festivities and eating out on vacation while visiting Grandma and Grandpa, but we are trying a no sugar January – the whole family! Right now, I’m wondering whose dumb idea this was anyway but mostly I want a nice soft warm chocolate chip cookie (or the dough!) more than about anything.  I tried a skinny frosty shake that I had pinned that was supposed to taste JUST like a real frosty, but I am sad to report that it did NOT.  It wasn’t bad, but to say it tasted just like a Frosty was kind of blasphemous. The good news is that fruit has never tasted so good, so maybe this will have a happy ending when we see how addicted to sugar we are and we begin to make some some healthier choices.
framing house

Anyway! We are still building—we got about 3 weeks behind when we had a huge snow and then long cold snap, we had to wait until right before Christmas for them to pour the foundation, but the good news is that they are framing now and things should be moving right along. The bad news is that we have a hundred decisions to make in the next few weeks so I don’t hold anything up after framing and I’m feeling a little overwhelmed. I pretty much took the whole month of December off in terms of finalizing any decisions, so I’m paying for it now. So today, we’re talking cabinets. Who ever KNEW there were so many different styles?? Not me. I just want a simple, classic look. Like our last 2 kitchens (here and here) we are doing white cabinets, but I’ve always just painted them, not picked out from scratch. Look at the choices!
cabinet door styles
I’ve narrowed it three basic styles, which would are all included in our building allowance…so my question to you is which do you think is most classic and will stand the test of time? Will any scream 2014!! in ten years?
cabinet collage
         1. recessed panel with a little bit of a bevel edge
2. shaker panel
3. raised panel
Which would you pick? I love hearing your thoughts because you always bring up things I would have never thought of…
Happy Tuesday ~ I’m off to find a delicious sugar free snack.

P.S. Thank you to everyone that let me know that my search box is broken on my blog and my comments are whacked sometimes, working on getting them fixed…don’t know what happened??

  1. I have style #3 in white and love them!

    ReplyDelete
  2. I don't think you could go wrong with any of them, but currently my "dream kitchen" would be white shaker cabinets with a white subway tile backsplash. Good luck with the decisions!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  3. I like #1 the best. The Shaker style is also nice, but #3 is a tad traditional- I think the other two could be pushed into any number of styles....

    ReplyDelete
  4. #1 looks more timeless to me. Good luck and enjoy the process!

  5. Ha ha ha, we were back in school Thursday too, I wish we could have waited until Monday. Each school district does it different. You were good to get them all ready and send them off. I probably would have just called it a sick day :)
As for the cabinets, I like number 3, I think it is the most classic and timeless look. I wish we had raised panels. Ours are recessed and they look and feel cheap to me

    1. We totally would have, but we're already cutting it close on days missed...

  6. I like 1 and 2 but really like 2 the best. How exciting!

    ReplyDelete
  7. #1 looks the best to me. Simple and classic with a little bit of interest for the eye.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I like #1 the best, and #3 is my second choice.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I love #2, but perhaps that's because I've always had raised panel cabinets, and the change to Shaker style is appealing because it's different than what I'm used to. :-)

Had to giggle at your Home Alone moment - we were supposed to go back yesterday, but we're on snow day #2!

    ReplyDelete
  10. #2!all the way! It is timeless and has a presence the other two don't have.

    ReplyDelete
  11. It's a no brainer to me -- #2! Options 1 and 3 look a bit dated in my opinion. I like how shaker style cabinets are more transitional and compliment either a contemporary home decor as well as traditional/transitional. We finished building a home a few months ago and we went with white inlaid shaker-style cabinet doors. I don't regret it a bit.

  12. I love #1 !! It seems classic and doesn't really lend to one era or style.
    Good luck!

  13. I love #2...classic and clean!

  15. I would pick #1. #3 is too traditional and #2 would have food resting on the little ledge with the way I cook.

  16. I had to laugh . . . we did the same thing one year after Christmas, though we were out playing in the cul-de-sac and didn't realize it was a school day until the bus started bringing the high school kids home . . . woops!
As for the cabinets, and while I think #3 is most traditional, I've had those, and the raised part shows a lot of dust, especially on white cabinets, so I'd go with either of the other 2, less dusting = more enjoying your home. Just my 2cents

    ReplyDelete
  17. I like #1 & #3 the best, but I'm leaning towards #1 -- it seems to be a combination of #2 & #3. I'm excited to see your end result!

    ReplyDelete
  18. We have #3, and have had them for 20+ years (custom when we built our home)...they are classic and never go out of style. They go with any type of decor, traditional, modern, country, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Raised Panel is particularly elegant and simple. It's sort of timeless and can give the room a bit of old elegance or even a fancy twist to a more modern room. And of course, white is always timeless. Keep up the good work, love the blog!

    ReplyDelete
  20. The most timeless are the #3 raised panel cabinets.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I like the simple shaker style of #2.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I like the Shaker style #2 the best, and it looks like it would be easiest to keep clean. My second choice is #1

    ReplyDelete
  23. #1 is my favorite. No real reason, it just is!

    ReplyDelete
  24. #3 are my fav -- for some reason the profile of the center coming towards you versus being flat tells my eye the cabinet is full which is more homey. Isn't that weird?!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I vote for #3! But what do I know?!?:!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I vote #3! Very classic...

    ReplyDelete
  27. #2 Chunky and will never be outdated in my opinion. That's it from Billings, Melissa

    ReplyDelete
  28. Number 2 is my favorite, but I like #1 also. I have #3 and it seems a little 70ish to me.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Wow, this is so not going to help because you have such a multitude of opinions here, but I adore #2, the Shaker panel. Something that simple never goes out of style.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I vote #1 or #2. I think either would be fine over time!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think you should pick what you love and not worry about anything else. 5 years ago we built and house and added gray paint and gray carpet. At that time, everyone was painting with lots of color and using brown carpet. I had to laugh when I started seeing all the gray in the blog world.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I would go with #3. Good luck!

  36. Thank you so so much for the post. I read it after reading your top posts for 2013. Lately, and even today, I've been frustrated with myself for not making any money and contributing to our family's finances. I have my bachelors in accounting and a few little things have come along but I've never felt right about leaving my two young children for any length of time. When I read sister becks quote tonight, I remembered why I haven't felt right about leaving them. So thank you. You are an answer to my prayers.

Our current scale requires complex math in order to figure out your real weight, and I'm usually not up for the challenge of figuring out where the hand is hitting the pounds marker, then subtracting 14.3 early in the morning... this would be cool...

I joined a new gym that doesn't have scales sitting around. I now have no idea how much I weigh, and it's really bothering me! I know that a number on a scale isn't the bottom line, but when I gain a few pounds, seeing the number on the scale go up helps me get back on track. It'd also be nice to know my BMI and body fat percentage so that I can keep things in perspective and adjust my workouts accordingly.

    ReplyDelete
  103. It would be great for me because I like to weigh myself CONSTANTLY and it would be nice if it would track!

I recently started a weight lose program.  I can tell I lost some weight & my daughter asked me who much I had lost.  I told her I do not know as I do not own scales.  I told her I could tell as my jeans were not as snug on me.  She said "well, no one is going to ask you how your jeans feel, they are going to ask in lbs".  She suggested I go weigh myself at Walmart and at the end of the month weigh myself again.  I told her I didn't like the idea of going to Walmart & hear on the intercom "Attention Walmart shoppers,  lady in asile 10 is using  the scales without paying, should we ask her to come back at the end of the month to see her progress", lol.  I really would love to keep track of my progress & win this giveaway.  Thanks bunches!

  115. I hate to weigh myself.  In the past, as dumb as this sounds, I have actually avoided the Dr's office because of the scale. I have since realized the error of my ways. 132. It would be wonderful to have an accurate scale that also tracks your weight and provide extra information.

I need a scale because I have never owned one and only randomly get my weight at places like the doctor's. I have restarted my normal fitness regimen and I would like to keep track of my weight!

    ReplyDelete
  134. I use the WeightBot iPhone app, and would be really happy to pair it with this scale. Keeping track of my fat% every day is not something I currently do.

    ReplyDelete
  135. I think this would be the perfect addition to my new healthy lifestyle. With all of the stresses of life in the past few years taking care of myself was always saved for last. Now I'm finally making it a priority and getting healthier by exercising everyday, eating healthier, and finding fun activities to try. Using the Withings Smart Body Scale will be a great way for me to keep track of my progress. I love that it keeps track of your BMI and body fat percentage because being fit doesn't only mean lowering the number on the scale. This will definitely help me make sure that when I'm reunited with my husband in a few months (military) I will look the best I have in years! :)

This scale will aide in keeping me accountable.  I would find it useful to know my BMI and % but have been too chicken to get it done.  I wonder how accurate this is.  Knowing could help me too.

  139. I like that the scale makes you smarter about where your weight is distributed. A lb isn't just a lb if it's mostly muscle.

  143. I would love this... and my old scale just broke before Christmas (which was convenient for me :) )!  I have not replaced it yet and this would be a HUGE upgrade!!

    ReplyDelete
  144. I would love to know my weight trends and I know my husband would too.  This would help us know how we can eat that day and how hard we need to exercise!  This seems like a really cool "gadget."

    ReplyDelete
  145. I would love the scale to keep track of my weight and help keep me in line with my after baby weight!

    ReplyDelete
  146. I am on a mission to lose weight and I weigh in daily to make sure I am staying on track. Our scale is a little difficult to use and people usually end up messing up the settings when they use it. I would love to have a scale that shows the BMI and this one is so sleek!

The bone mass feature is something that would be a plus to me along with the charting of weight.

I just turned 50, and am about 30 pounds heavier than I should be. Owning a scale would be very  helpful  to losing weight.

  149. This scale would be a good thing for me, because I'm trying to lose baby weight after having my fifth baby.  It seems to be hanging on though.  Maybe this scale would motivate me more:)

  150. the smart body scale would be a great addition to my ongoing goal to stay healthy and introduce my husband to this as well.   It sounds like a great gadget.

  153. Oh I would love to win a scale like that!  I think it would be great for meeting New Year's weight goals, but especially for day to day weight managment...I find if I weigh on an accurate scale daily, then I don't gain, but if I don't weigh in regularly pounds creep on over time.

    ReplyDelete
  154. WOW !! Wonderful scale.  I would love to win one.  Perfect for my family.

  157. Oh this is great!  I am currently do a 90 day challenge with some other ladies in my neighborhood.  We are doing a no sugar, 6 servings of raw fruits and veggies and daily exercise.  Then at the end we see how mush our body fat % went down.  This would be perfect!

I would love this scale! I'm having a baby next week and have been thinking about getting back in shape!

    ReplyDelete
  161. This would be great for me as I've recently started a health transformation journey and I own a rather inconsistent scale.  I really don't think it's possible to gain 10 pounds one day and lose 20 the next...  Plus, charts make me happy :)

    ReplyDelete
  162. We got rid of our old, cracked, nasty scale and have never purchased a new one to replace it.  Now that I'm actually taking the time to be a little healthier and exercise some, it would be nice to see how I progress, and not just by how many pounds I weigh!  Thanks for the great giveaway!

  163. This would be such a lifesaver!  Over the past year I have been working out and trying to get my bloodsugars in check after the birth of our third child....my sugars never regulated - been walking 3 miles a day, doing Zumba and finally taking up a spin class.  Trying to work off pounds and regulate sugars with diet and excercise to hopefully have them get better.  This would be a great tool to help me track "good" days.  Great post!

    ReplyDelete
  164. Promised my doctor at my annual checkup last month I would lower my body fat by next year.  However, have no way of knowing whether I am improving or not so a Withings Smart Body Scale would certainly be a plus!

    ReplyDelete
  165. Just the other day I was thinking that my scale must be on the fritz because after two weeks of losing consistently, now it just keeps coming up with the SAME number!  Grrr.   I think it's stuck.  I love that the Withings Smart Body scale can track body fat percentages and having it sent to my computer just makes life so much easier!  Especially with long term tracking.  I would love to be able to look back over past months and compare with my food journals to see what was really working and what wasn't.

    ReplyDelete
  166. I would love this scale - I can't ever remember numbers and I don't even have a digital scale so it's hard for me to see those small little marks on my old school style scale.

    ReplyDelete
  167. I always have my iPhone with me, and try to track most things with it (I like to really take advantage of a big expense like an iPhone).  This would be one thing that it could track on its own!

Oh my. I could definitely use this right now. I'm proudly recovering from depression an an eating disorder and learning how to feed myself properly and do things that are good for me, like exercise for the enjoyment and endorphins and to do something nice for myself. This would help me monitor and admire my progress. I hope I win!

  185. I would love the BMI and Fat % feature that can be uploaded to a device! I just started using my iPod to track my workouts so this would be an awesome addition. Although I suspect I would like it the first time I step on it (truth hurts sometimes!) but it would motivate me to keep working out!

  186. Wow! This scale is amazing. I'd love it to keep track of my portions as I'm working to eat healthier and exercise consistently!

  187. Good for you, Melissa!  Thank you for being courageous and sharing your journey on the blog.  As I am hitting mid-thirties, I am seeing that I have to make changes because all my weight is hitting my mid-section!  I'm going back to what helped me lose 15 lbs a couple years ago -- eating more protein than carbs (already suggested by other readers) and weight training.  Train with the highest weight you can handle while still doing the exercise properly, even with fewer reps it yields results better than more reps with lower weights!

  188. I've struggled with my weight my entire life and would love this to track my progress and hopefully drop the weight once and for all!
