I've realized that these posts are for me more than anyone - you think you will remember but then 3 years go by and a friend asks you because they are going and you realize how much you have forgotten! So here is a recap and recommendations from our time in Madrid and Portugal. You can also see the videos on Instagram here and here.
We traveled in May 2024 to visit our daughter who has been teaching English at a private school in Madrid. It was so fun to have her as our guide because she knew where to go, how to get there, where to eat, what to buy at market, and had great insights on history and culture from living there and also doing a study abroad with BYU the previous summer! Our dream for traveling! My husband served his mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints 27 years ago in the Lisbon Portugal South mission so we could not be over there and not drive over to some of his areas from his mission. So I'm sure that no one will be taking a trip quite like ours but here were some highlights that I would recommend to those traveling there.
If you are renting a car you need to know that you will need an international driver's license for Spain and the rental car agency will charge you for going across the border (like $75) Also, most if not all U.S. auto insurances will not cover international rentals so plan on paying extra for the rental agency insurance. Just a heads up.
MADRID! What an incredible, beautiful city. It blew us away! The history at every turn and the small markets, bakeries, and fruterias on every corner. And the metro was so clean, affordable and straightforward and made navigating around the city a breeze.
Places to visit:
Palacio Real Madrid - amazing! So majestic and beautiful with gorgeous views. Well worth the ticket cost (around $20?)
Plaza Mayor - so fun to walk around and explore and grab something to eat at the San Miguel Food Market (see below)
Museo Del Prado - so many monumental pieces of art in here! Incredible. We had our own personal guide in Lauren but there are so many museum tours and headset tours at the museum and online. We didn't have time for the Reina Sofia or the Thyssen museums - for next time!
We loved doing some shopping (of course!) around the Puerta de Sol - Primark, Zara, Mango were so fun to explore for fun fast fashion and the little shops and boutiques in my daughter's neighborhood were classy and chic. Did I mention how much we loved Madrid?? Grab some gelato or yogurt and be sure to jump up and touch the bear's bum at El Oso y el Madroño for good luck! If you are LDS the temple was a sweet reprieve so schedule some time there if you can.
El Retiro Park - we could have spent all day here. Like a Central Park in NYC but even better imo. A perfect place for a run or walk, to bring a picnic, visit the rose gardens, and you've got to rent boats on the pond.

Favorite Eats:
Pez Tortilla - tortillas in Spain are like omelettes and this place is tiny and crazy busy but for good reason. We loved the Parmesan, brie, and original. You've also got to try the croquetas!
San Miguel Food Market - you've got to duck in here when you are visiting Plaza Mayor - what a fun place to get a feel of all the good food in Madrid. It is crowded and noisy and a bit overwhelming but so fun to walk around. Good luck deciding what to get!
Cuzco Lupita - my son is in Peru so we had to give a nod to him. Huge portions - you can definitely share. Try the lomo saltado or chicken and wash it down with some Inca Kola!
Cafetería Restaurante Dados - if you are at the LDS Madrid temple this is a short walk and have wonderful authentic Spanish food. This is where our daughter's roommate wanted to go to have us try Huevos Rotos con Jamon. You will quickly see how much they love ham here and for good reason!! So good and nothing like our ham here. It's more like a prosciutto? I love how you can order a ham sandwich with olive oil on warm, crusty bread at most places.
Churros at Chocolateria San Gines! Their churros are not as sweet and don't have cinnamon like the ones we are used to but you dip them in the most delicious warm pudding-like chocolate dip and they are the ultimate comfort food! Chocolataria San Gines is the oldest and the best in a charming historical district.
Sushitokyo Chueca - all you can eat sushi! Make reservations and come with an empty, expanded stomach. We were laughing and feeling the pressure that if you DON'T finish a dish they charge you $5 so order carefully. It's actually a brilliant idea to cut down on food waste.
PORTUGAL
My husband served part of his LDS mission there so we went over to visit some of his areas there and the top recommendations would be:
Palace of Pena - absolutely blew our minds. The beauty, the views!! and you've got to go to the Castelo dos Mouros while you're up there and get your workout and go to the top. So worth it. It's good to note to get your tickets ahead of time (tickets were gone for the morning we would be there so we just did the outside and that was just as amazing and didn't take as much time) and also that you can't drive up to the castle. We had a car rental so we parked at the Parque de Estacionamento Estacao de Sintra and then just got an Uber to and from the parking lot and that worked really well.
Belem Tower- we loved coming down here to see this and the Monument of the Discoveries
Cabo Da Roca was beautiful to hit on our way back to Spain! Breathtaking shore views.
If you want a taste of traditional, charming, small town Portugal we loved Evora! See the Roman temple, The Chapel of the Bones, the Roman temple right up there, we loved eating at Tabua do Naldo right outside on the street (try the traditional bacalhau! the pot roast was also so good) and the little shops are great place to buy some souvenirs.
What a beautiful place!! Seriously, you can't go wrong with any island in Hawaii. When $139 each way tickets come up on Southwest you find a time and GO. Maui was a perfect escape. ♥ Here are some thoughts on our first time there at the beginning of March. No affiliates with any of these, just our experience.
Where to stay: we LOVED the Westin Kaanapali. We had siblings stay here and had recommended it and it exceeded our expectations. If you love a resort feel with lots of pools, hot tubs, but right on the beach with a boardwalk/sidewalk right in front for running/walking, restaurants on site, etc. this is your place. The Westin Nanea next door was more family friendly. We found a room from a timeshare on AirBnB - we got it from this seller and I was hesitant to book without reviews but Airbnb said we were guaranteed so we went for it and it was wonderful (we had a King bed although the listing says queen?). Also check out Redweek where people sell their timeshare weeks! You can also find great condos along beaches on AirBnB but book early. This was the view from our room 😍
Activities
Whale/Dolphin/Snorkeling Adventure: One of my favorite things was the Captain Steve's Whale/Dolphin/Snorkeling Adventure. We went to two beautiful snorkeling spots and swam with turtles and saw beautiful fish and coral and went dolphin and whale watching. It's from 7a.m. - 2 p.m. and includes snacks and lunch -- I would definitely recommend as it checked a lot of Maui bucket list items for me. There were 20 people on our excursion and it was so fun talking and getting to know everyone on the boat. When we were talking our new friends they also highly recommend the Sea Maui sunset cruise and the Teralini dinner cruise (but they said get the gift cards at the Costco in Maui for the Teralini)
West Maui Day:
Spend a morning or afternoon exploring West Maui. You can take a few hours or all day, depending on what you want to do. Put it in your GPS and decide. Note: you may not have reception after you get out of the residential areas so you'll want to download directions on your maps/phone. This was close to Kaanapali and a perfect outing for a Sunday afternoon. Here is what you can do:
* if you want tons of information and directions and good stopping spots you can buy and download the Shaka West Maui Guide. Not necessary but if you are information nerds like us and enjoy good stories, I think you'll like it. If you are planning on Road to Hana guide (which was just awesome, see below) you can also buy the bundle.
Eat breakfast or lunch at Gazebo Restaurant (this had too long of a wait so we moved on but looked delicious!!)
This was an awesome tip from our friend, Drew. If you want great snorkeling or a great chance to spot some sea turtles walk next door to the Napili Point Condos and enter Honokuana Bay and bring snorkeling gear or just watch for turtles! We saw a couple surface and lots of snorkelers. Or, if you want to skip eating at Gazebo we just parked on the residential street near 7 Malialani Pl and walked over through the Napili Point Resort parking lot and stay left on the sidewalk and you should see where the access to the bay is. All beaches in Hawaii are public so you should see people there.
Magical Enchanted Forest: frrom there you can head to the Enchanted Forest. It's just an amazing, peaceful forest you can walk through that leads to Honolua Bay which is also beautiful. WELL worth the stop. Just put Honolua Farms kitchen in your GPS and there is a parking lot with lots of spaces and the trailhead is directly across from it. It truly is magical!
Nakalele Blowhole -- continue on to the amazing Nakalea Blow Hole. So cool to see! You can go down close to it and get wet (but please be so careful) or admire from above
Olivine Pools - continue on to the Olivine Pools and bring your suits for a dip but again be so careful if the waves are big and crashing up high on the shore. We were fine admiring from above but lots of people had on bathing suits to fully experience the pools.
I would head back after the Olivine Pools if you don't like heights or windy roads but if you are adventurous and have a strong stomach you can continue on to the Waihee Ridge trail for a beautiful hike.
We continued on to the Pulehu Chapel, one of the must-sees for my husband. It was the first chapel on any of the islands for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and has a rich history. Download and listen to Saints, Volume 2 Chapter 10 Truth and Righteousness on your way if you can and read as much about the life of Jonathan Napela as you can. Just remarkable. It is closed right now for Covid restrictions so we just wanted to drive by. Again, I need to stress that the drive to the chapel from the Olivine Pools is windy, one way at points, and steep if you're up for it! Otherwise, I would come from the main highways. As we drove up to the fence a car pulled up at the same time and it was one of the Bishops on the island that was bringing some friends over so we got to take a tour with them. A true tender mercy and a highlight of our trip. ♥

Warren & Annabelle's Magic Show - this was super fun and I appreciated that is was clean and family friendly and just laugh out loud FUNNY with amazing tricks. There aren't many things to do after sunset so if you want a fun night on the town this is a great option. We went to the later show and I was SO tired with the time change so I would have probably done the earlier show since the later one ended at 11 p.m.. They do offer an appetizer package and we got that but I probably wouldn't do it again. Good but nothing to write home about and pretty pricey. Note that the doors open but the show doesn't start until an hour and a half past that. I would call and see what time is the latest you can show up for the show 😉

Road to Hana! By far this is what everyone will tell you to do! We loved it. Make sure you know it's an all day adventure. We were on our last day in Maui and we didn't want to spend it all in the car, especially after our West Maui adventure day on Sunday! We loved the resort and hanging out there and on the beach so we decided to just do a half day Road to Hana 😁 You can see our favorite stops and recommendations here for the perfect shortened Road to Hana trip.
Food Here are our favorites:
Mama's Fish House: there is a reason there is a 6 month wait. Seriously, make reservations now or download the Open Table app on your phone and set it up to be notified if a table comes open. I had the notifications on and when a table came open it was gone in seconds. Here is a little tip: when you get to Maui, check Open Table between 11:30 a.m and 1:45 p.m. Maui time. That seems to be when they are calling people with reservations and some cancel around that time and they seem to be available before they go to the notifications. Also when we were there I was talking to the attendant and she said if you show up around lunch and ask for bar seating you will most likely get it and then see if there are any open tables you can move to.
We got a lunchtime reservation and I'm not kidding that it was the best meal of my life. I had the Mahi-Mahi stuffed with lobster baked in a Macademisa nut crust. I'm drooling just typing that. For appetizer, I also loved the shrimp won tons.
My husband got the Mama's Curry and liked it but he just doesn't get excited about seafood like I do but he was thoroughly entertained with how much I loved it. If you love good fish, it's pretty safe to say you're going to love Mama's.
And look at the setting!!! It's part of the whole experience.

Baya Bowls - our friends Drew and Hailey recommended this and they were our favorite acai bowls! Definitely add the peanut/almond butter for extra protein.
Lahaina Pizza Company - come an hour or so before sunset to get on the list and you will not regret it!! Such a beautiful view and we loved the deep dish pizza. You can shop around while you are waiting for your table. Our favorite thing to bring back are the pineapple, acai, and lilikoi Hi Chews that I think you can only get in Hawaii?? We got them at the ABC store below the on the main level. Also, be sure to see the Banyan tree while you are in Lahaina, and grab some Ululani's Shave Ice afterward 😋
photo from Google User - I didn't take any there |
Kihei Caffe we LOVED this place for breakfast. We also appreciated that they opened at 6 a.m. for an early start on Road to Hana! Make sure to request the coconut syrup with the banana macademia nut pancakes. Very family friendly too ♥
I hope this helps! If you are going to Maui I'm envious of you! You can't go wrong there. Just enjoy and be excited to experience such a beautiful part of the world. Feel free to add any other recommendations in the comments! Thanks ♥
Road to Hana - this is by far what everyone said to do. Thank you! We loved it. Make sure you know it's an all day adventure. We were on our last day in Maui and we didn't want to spend it all in the car, especially after our West Maui adventure day on Sunday! We loved the resort and hanging out there and on the beach so we decided to just do a half day Road to Hana 😁 Here is an itinerary if you want to get an awesome taste of the Road to Hana with some incredible stops, waterfalls, views, but only takes about 4 hours including stops -- perfect for a half day adventure or with kids, those worried about driving the Road to Hana, or those that don't want to be in the car all day! Here is the map of where we'll be stopping - you can click on it to edit or add your stops.
We began around 6:30 a.m. in Kaanapali, stopped at Kihei Cafe (see here) for breakfast and drove up to Paia to begin. I can't recommend the Shaka Guide of Road to Hana enough. So much information, great tips for parking, warnings, fun stories and well worth your money. Download it on your phone and it will be your best friend for the day. You will also hear great stories on the way back. The GPS will see where you are and tell you turn by turn information. So amazing to me!
Be sure you fill up with gas and have your phone charged as well as a car charger because you are going to be using it all day. Here are the stops that were well worth it for our half day Road to Hana adventure so we were back at the resort by 1 p.m. For any of these, if the parking is full keep going and you can hit it on the way back.
1. Twin Falls Hike - it costs $10 to park here but well worth it. Beautiful walks/hikes and waterfalls and trees!
2. Wailua Valley State Wayside definitely pull over at this one if there are parking spots and take the stairs up for a spectacular 360 degree views! This is well worth the stop for birds-eye views.
3. Ke ' Anae Arboretum - a perfect place to stop, free of charge, and walk on the path (kids can run!) and see native trees you most likely have never seen before. The rainbow eucalyptus trees were incredible and worth the stop alone. If there are no parking spots hit it on your way back. You will pass Halfway to Hana stand on your way to the falls (next destination) but I would wait for Aunt Sandy's. (see below)
4. Upper Waikani Falls (Three Bears Falls) this is where we look at the beautiful falls, get pics from the car window and turn around to head back wherever you see a good spot. There is no parking but people will disregard and still stop anyway. 😕 If you really want to stop keep driving and see if there are any spots past the bridge.
5. Lunch at Aunt Sandy's Banana Bread we tried several and this was our favorite!! We are hitting this on the way back but if it makes more sense if the parking lots were full, go whenever you want! Be sure to check the hours - they were open until 2:30 p.m. and closed on Sundays when we were there. This is a perfect spot to grab a warm loaf of banana bread and some milk (they also have smoothies, hot dogs, sandwiches, etc) and then you can take it down to the Kenae Lookout to enjoy a picnic with an incredible view ♥
6. Keanae Lookout keep driving down the road past the baseball fields and look for the Ke'Anae Congregational Church built in 1860 out of coral and rocks. The doors should be open and visitors are welcome to walk in for peace and reflection. It is the only building in the area that survived the 1946 tsunami. Go to the end of the peninsula for some incredible coastline views! One of my very favorite places of our trip.
I hope you enjoyed the shortened Road to Hana itinerary! Head back knowing you saw some incredible sights but only took half a day. See more of our Maui recommendations here. Enjoy!!
