  • some things I have learned about being a Mom by Janell

    03 May 2011

    mom 2011
    JanellBeals
    Please welcome Janell Beals from Portland, Oregon! She is the mother of Isabella & Max, thus the name of her blog, Isabella & Max Rooms, and the founding editor of the e-zine, House of Fifty. I love that she’s been on tv, in magazines, in print and it’s still evident to me where her first love is: her family. We are thrilled that she is kicking off the week for us!

    It's interesting to me how there is virtually no training for one of the most important jobs we'll ever do in our life. One day we are pregnant and the next we have this little being in our arms who depend on us for everything. Nothing in ours lives to date could have prepared us for this incredible gift and responsibility. So we stumble through, figuring it out one day at a time.
    I'd like to think I've learned a few things over the years, but I also know in the upcoming years they'll present me with new challenges and that I'll be quickly trying to come up with yet another game plan! But for now, this is what I know, for our family.

    30 April 2011

     april 2011 236 2 God does notice us, and he watches over us.
    But it is usually through another person
    that he meets our needs.

    Therefore, it is vital that
    we serve each other.

    putting a room together: day 4 {beginning & the finish}

    28 April 2011

    1. You have your inspiration
    2. You are not afraid to copy
    3. You have gathered
    4. Now, the hardest part (for me) sometimes is to just
    begin.
    The room isn’t very pretty. I’ve got an ugly stash in the closet. Motivation is loooow.
    march 2011 095 1 But, if I muster up just enough courage to just begin painting the walls, usually it starts looking better really quickly. Look how great that wall looks~it gives a glimmer of hope for the rest of the room and the little shot of excitement I need to keep going.
    (wait! before you do anything…take a before picture. Make it look as ugly as possible :) It will feel so good to compare it to your after)

    putting a room together: day 3 {be a gatherer}

    27 April 2011

    Soooo, some may call this hoarding, but I prefer the term gathering.
    Anyone with money to burn can walk into a showroom and say, “I want this entire room. Have it delivered at 9 a.m. on Thursday. And send in the painters and interior designers as well. I’ll be at the dog spa with Fifi if you need me…”
    The rest of us have to be a little more creative and patient as we
    gather.

    putting a room together: day 2 {copy, copy, copy}

    26 April 2011

    You don’t know what you’re doing?
    I’ll let you in on a little secret: neither do I!
    I’ve never been to design school. I have no credentials, except that I love seeing potential in spaces and all things “home.” When people ask what I “do,” I always say mom and if my husband is there he may chime in that I have a blog. And then the questions come:
    “Oh, what kind of blog?”
    It’s a home decor, kind of design on a dime type blog with some other randomness.
    “Oh, is that what your degree is in?”
    No, my degree is in elementary ed.
    Oh….that’s interesting.
    I usually go on to say it began in Texas when we had a really ugly house, blah, blah, blah, but it really makes no sense.
    I guess my point here is:
    fake it until you make it aka copy, copy, copy!
