Here is how it looked when they started work on it:
My awesome dad putting up the chair rail for the board and batten:
Here is how it looks today: (this is coming down the stairs)![]()
How it usually looks. My closet ain’t so Berenstein-Bearish anymore, is it? ![]()
I have just been gathering chairs at yard sales and painting them to go with my $20 yard sale table. I left the laminate top on the table because it cleans up so nicely (thank you to my wonderful readers for the suggestion!)…I cannot tell you how much this table gets used for legos, playing school, coloring, building forts, crafts, etc. If you have to choose one piece of furniture in your playroom, I would go with a table.
You remember big bird:![]()

#7 art and our states quarters map. We almost have them all! ![]()
And we did the board and batten! We did it ourselves to save some $$ It was really actually simple and inexpensive…I’ll show you what we did coming soon. Do you see that big, blank wall? We have plans for it and it could involve you…more later. :)
More about the alphabet letters here…
The paint color on the top is Kilim Beige from Sherwin Williams, the white is Behr Ultra Pure White from the Home Depot.
It leads into the family/tv room:

The wall with the map/chalkboard/whiteboard info is here.
Thanks for coming in…of course there is almost zero natural light in this room, but we love it and have worn it in well. I love banishing them all down to the basement when I’m making dinner.
Happy Thursday!

it looks great! So did you have the vision for how to finish the basement (where walls would go, etc)...or did someone help w/that? i look at our unfinished basement and I just can't vision it "done."
I love it! Looks like a lot of fun can/will/does happen there ;o)
What a great room! I love it! My favorite parts: The colorful chairs, and the fact that it is in the basement away from the rest of the house!
Jodi~ I'll have to do a post on how we decided what in the heck to do down there and show you the layout. It involved a lot of sketching, taping off our imaginary rooms, running it by our contractor, and tweaking and re-re-re tweaking :)
It's turned out wonderfully, Melissa! Well worth all the hammering, dust, and all that construction stuff.
Seriously, this is such a cute playroom!
This is SOOO over the top fabulous. Will you adopt me...or maybe just your dad adopt me so I can get him to cover over for some board and batten too? That #7 sign is ROCKIN!!
This room is ADORABLE!! I absolutely love it. It just invites you in and inspires you to play and create, whether you're a kid or not. :-)
GREAT job!! I love the colorful chairs!! Very cute.

Way to go, Melissa! It's so much fun to see the finished space! It's obviously
--kid-friendly
--crowd-friendly
--creativity-friendly.
That's a lot to ask of one room--but it's all that AND it looks wonderful AND you created the look on a budget. I really don't think you could ask more of one space! It's magnificent.
Oh, and when you get to banish them to the basement at dinner-making time, I'd say it's also
--mom-friendly. :)
Love you!
Love IT! Totally agree on the table in the playroom. It is the most used item in ours!
I love everything.....you did a great job!
What a wonderful playroom for the children. So bright and cheery. Beautiful renovation. Hugs,Marty
So colorful and fun! Loved seeing the before shot, it really shows how much work was done! Enjoy!
Ooooo - is it gonna be a post card wall? Not that you *need* anything else down there...it's perfection as is. Fabulous job.
(The only thing I miss about living in Utah is having a basement. Gotta love banishing sword fighting to downstairs.)
That looks great...you are one lucky girl, can ya send your dad my way! I bet the kids love all the room. Can't wait to see whats next.

& yes i agree with you on the table piece for a playroom..it is a vital piece.
Oh, can we come live with you??!! haha I love the whole room!!! Everything is wonderful. I love all the cute touches. Well done! I am so copying that number art when I redo my kids' bedroom. Thanks for the inspiration.
I so wish we had basements in California! What a great space you created. It is so fresh and fun. Love, love love it!

I'm in love with this playroom, open/spacious and real......looks like a place the kids can really play and have a nice time. :) Great things you've done in there.
Wow, wow! This is AWESOME. I would so love to have a space like this. You did an incredible job with every detail.
Incredible! You can come and decorate my house. We have tastes about the same, only you can actually make it work. :D

Love it!!! I am definately stilling the idea of a map but it will have to be in my sons bedroom. Any suggestions for those of us who have kids but no space to devote to a playroom?

Cute pics!!! Cute Dad!!! Love it!!! XOXOXO
Melissa-
I love reading your blog, thanks for sharing your great ideas! The playroom looks great! Can you share the paint color and brand that you used for the walls? Thanks- Marci in TN
thepetersfamily3@aol.com
The paint color is Sherwin Williams Kilim Beige. Home Depot had it in their computer. I love this color and you'll be seeing more of it! Good luck~
I missed this post, Melissa. :) Thanks for the grand tour---I want to come play, it looks so cute. ;)
Melissa,
It is absolutely gorgeous!!! Oh my goodness! My boys would go crazy in a room like that! Thanks for all the great inspirational pictures. I'll be bookmarking this post. :)
Blessings,
Traci
I love the photo of your dad. He looks so happy to be helping.
Wow...what an amazing space for you kids to play in! I wish I'd had a place like that when our kids were younger. My youngest is constantly dragging his legos down to the living room, making walking in there a dangerous mission!
ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!! So bright and light! I wish my basement were looking that good! :)
question...do you keep most of the toys in the closet? i have been thinking of doing that, but i don't know if it will work. i have a great toy storage thing from ikea, but the play area is so small and it would be great to put it in the closet. just wanted to ask!
love the room and table. where did you find it?
