playroom!

Here is how it looked when they started work on it:Feb 2010 007 (2) My awesome dad putting up the chair rail for the board and batten:april 2010 033
Here is how it looks today: (this is coming down the stairs)september 2010 056 1

How it usually looks. My closet ain’t so Berenstein-Bearish anymore, is it? august 2010 022 1
I have just been gathering chairs at yard sales and painting them to go with my $20 yard sale table. I left the laminate top on the table because it cleans up so nicely (thank you to my wonderful readers for the suggestion!)…I cannot tell you how much this table gets used for legos, playing school, coloring, building forts, crafts, etc. If you have to choose one piece of furniture in your playroom, I would go with a table.september 2010 073 1
You remember big bird:september 2010 074 1
#7 art and our states quarters map. We almost have them all! september 2010 070 1
And we did the board and batten! We did it ourselves to save some $$ It was really actually simple and inexpensive…I’ll show you what we did coming soon. Do you see that big, blank wall? We have plans for it and it could involve you…more later. :)
More about the alphabet letters here
The paint color on the top is Kilim Beige from Sherwin Williams, the white is Behr Ultra Pure White from the Home Depot.

Thanks for coming in…of course there is almost zero natural light in this room, but we love it and have worn it in well. I love banishing them all down to the basement when I’m making dinner.

Happy Thursday!

  2. it looks great! So did you have the vision for how to finish the basement (where walls would go, etc)...or did someone help w/that? i look at our unfinished basement and I just can't vision it "done."

  5. Jodi~ I'll have to do a post on how we decided what in the heck to do down there and show you the layout. It involved a lot of sketching, taping off our imaginary rooms, running it by our contractor, and tweaking and re-re-re tweaking :)

  12. Way to go, Melissa! It's so much fun to see the finished space! It's obviously

    --crowd-friendly
    --creativity-friendly.

That's a lot to ask of one room--but it's all that AND it looks wonderful AND you created the look on a budget. I really don't think you could ask more of one space! It's magnificent.

Oh, and when you get to banish them to the basement at dinner-making time, I'd say it's also

    --mom-friendly. :)

    Love you!

  17. Ooooo - is it gonna be a post card wall? Not that you *need* anything else down there...it's perfection as is. Fabulous job.

(The only thing I miss about living in Utah is having a basement. Gotta love banishing sword fighting to downstairs.)

  45. Wow...what an amazing space for you kids to play in! I wish I'd had a place like that when our kids were younger. My youngest is constantly dragging his legos down to the living room, making walking in there a dangerous mission!

  46. ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!! So bright and light! I wish my basement were looking that good! :)

  47. question...do you keep most of the toys in the closet? i have been thinking of doing that, but i don't know if it will work. i have a great toy storage thing from ikea, but the play area is so small and it would be great to put it in the closet. just wanted to ask!

  48. love the room and table. where did you find it?

  49. I love everything you did Melissa. Your house looks amazing, gussied up for pictures or no. I like it more because of your personality that comes out in your comments. You love great design but your family comes first and you don't put on a big show. But at the same time, you don't let the fact that you have small children tell you it's impossible to have a pretty house. Keep up the great inspiration :-) (I chuckled at the pic in the playroom with all the boys being boys. I have a 9-yr old boy. I also have two teenage girls, 16 and 13.

Thank you, Ashlee! I did spray paint them: I used Krylon's Ivy leaf (green) caribbean blue, and cherry red. Hope this helps~

  52. I love it! How did you do your wall hanging for all your kids artwork?

    ReplyDelete
  53. please forgive me if this is written in the post somewhere...and i might just be silly...but those chairs...did you spray paint them?  i picked up two cans of spray paint tonight for my table & chairs project.  i chose 'green apple' by rustoleum...which turned out kind of 'yellowish'.  i'm disappointed!  your playroom has been the inspiration for mine...just so you know :)  your children are so lucky to have such a creative mother to build them a place filled with memories.  xo.
