thrifty treasures monday…

12 April 2010

It was our neighborhood cleanup this weekend, when everyone puts out what they don’t want and the city comes to pick it up. I plucked up a few things from my neighbor’s piles {thank you, nice neighbors who throw great things away!}
an upholstered chair I thought would be perfect to make over for my daughter’s room (free!)

A screen door. I’m thinking this may be a headboard in hiding?? or a message board? what do you see? (free!)april 2010 104
I also found this outdoor light on major clearance at HDepot~ ($18, regular price was $74.97)april 2010 108
I thought it would be lovely in the front entryway to replace this:
I’m joining Rhoda’s party today!

  1. Hey, wait are you doing with my brass light fixture? : ) They are horrible and I've been looking at light fixtures, too, recently. Maybe I should see what's out there on clearance. I love the door you found! I am definitely seeing message board. Maybe bulletin board on top, chalkboard on the bottom {this way the kids could draw on it, too}.

  2. That should say "WHAT are you doing with my brass light fixture", not "wait". My internal spellcheck if off today!

  4. I, too was thinking half chalk half cork. I like the idea of hanging it horizonatly if space allows. Can't wait to see the results.

  5. Funny, first thing that came to my mind was upholstered headboard.(I don't see screen on it) A little foam, a little batting, some buttons for tufting and fabric of course! And the chair is great too, can't believe someone threw it out!

  6. Your free stuff is fab and so is that gorgeous outdoor light! Good job!! I swear, it's trash day on preschool days and I always look as I drive through the neighborhood on my way to take Natalie, but I never see anything by trash cans. :( :(

  7. anita: I guess it's not really a screen door, there is no screen. Maybe it was a pantry door or something. I think I am door illiterate :)

  17. Oh, I love your freebies, you can't beat that! And that lantern is gorgeous. IT will look great in your foyer. If I run across one, I'm getting it for my breakfast table.

  20. I love curbside dump. They usually have one day that you can get rid of big items for the garbage men to pick up. That is when I like to go curbside shopping!! Great finds! If it were me I would use the large piece of wood for a headboard (but maybe that's just because I have my eye out for one right now) Add a little paint and wainscotting!! And I can already invsion the chair. Cute!!

  21. Love your finds! I want to find a furniture/knick knack swap...that would be so fun!

    I totally need your advice on a few things...we just moved into a new house and I have this space that I'm not sure what to do with it and I also have a kitchen island that we purchased for our old home that won't work in the new house and I want to re-purpose it...I just know you will have the answer!
