our morning

18 October 2010

night before: my husband and I had our weekly Sunday night meeting. Go over the calendar for the week, talk about us, talk about our kids, set some goals, let’s get up at 5:30, switch off exercising, quiet time in the morning for prayer/scripture/planning day. In bed by 10:15.

Awesome.

1:15 a.m. 10 y.o. daughter comes in…her stomach hurts. I get up, get her some water, honey you probably ate too much. (We had a birthday party for Grandma and there was much gorging on cheesecake). Let’s get some rest and you’ll feel better in the morning.

1:45 a.m. 8 y.o. daughter comes in…her arm hurts. She fell off the swing and we’re pretty sure it’s not broken, but she may have sprained it. Get her some ibuprofen, make a mental note to call the doctor in the morning to get it looked at. She wants to sleep upstairs, so I make her a bed on the couch, prop her arm up on a pillow.

3:15 a.m. 10 y.o. comes back in….Mom, I threw up. My first question of course was…"where??”

“In the toilet downstairs.” thank you thank you thank you thank you

Get her mouth rinsed out, settled back in bed, put the purple bucket next to her pillow.

Can’t get back to sleep…start thinking about things I forgot to do over the weekend…sneak out to empty my brain out on paper.

8 y.o on the couch sits right up. “Whatcha doin, Mom? Do you think I’ll need a cast? Do you think they’ll give me a sling? Will they write a note for P.E.? What about piano? Will I just play with one hand? Do you think I’ll have to stay in for recess? I could cut out paper for Mrs. Thomas with my right hand…..”

Write my thoughts down,  get back into bed and finally begin to doze off…

4:30 a.m. Baby starts screaming. Husband gets up with him and rocks him back to sleep.

6:00 a.m. Baby wakes up for day. There is no way he’s going back down now. I bring him out,  give him some Cheerios, find Tigger and Pooh on TV, my 8 yo on the couch gets up and wants breakfast so I let them eat and watch tv together while I stagger over to the couch.

7:15 a.m. I hear clinking of jars and wake up to find half the pantry around me. My baby is happily lining up jars and cans next to my head. Pure chaos follows:

5 yo steps on my 3 yo’s head as he’s getting out of bed. Fighting, yelling, screaming follow. 10 yo comes up and looks like she’s been run over by a truck. Wants something to eat. 8 yo wants to go to the doctor right now. 5 yo can’t find his read aloud books he’s supposed to bring back today. 3 yo is in bed still screaming and only wants Daddy. Daddy is in the shower.

7:30 a.m. Husband is ready to go, garage door opens about a foot and then stops. The emergency release lever won’t work and one of the springs is broken. Lovely. I need the van for dr. appts today, so I have to take him to campus. Load all the little kids up, put on cartoons for my girls.

8:20 a.m Make it back just as bus is pulling up…5 year old jumps on wearing his soccer shirt…for the 4th day in a row.

Call the doctor, call the garage door guy, call the airport to see where my phone that I lost and they found and were going to send is…

See my menu plan for the week. Breakfast this morning for me was going to be: 1 egg and 2 egg whites scrambled with 2 slices of cooked and crumbled turkey bacon with 1 Tbs salsa wrapped in a whole grain tortilla with 1/2 cup diced cantaloupe. 300 calories.

Instead I’m wolfing down a leftover piece of chocolate birthday cake. 900 calories.

We’re off to the doctor….

Happy Monday.

  2. oh girl - what a night! I thought my getting up 3 times last night & a screaming 3 year old was rough. Guess it's all relative! Hope your 10yo feels better soon!

  3. Bless your heart! You need a nap today. I hope the 10yr old feels better soon, and the rest of the kiddo's realize you need some Mommy time. Hopefully tomorrow can be more on track.

  12. I'm just wondering how you managed to blog about it! Days like this are exactly why my own blog has been so quiet lately. Do you think that before the day is over some older person with grown kids will tell you that "you're going to miss these days"? hahahaha. I'm sure we'll miss plenty, but days like what you just posted on? Nah......

  16. I don't blame you for the chocolate cake! I so would have picked that too and maybe a diet coke along with it. Doesn't chocolate cure anything and everything anyway. Hope your day gets better:)

  19. Girl, I hope you give yourself a nap today!!! Make everyone else watch some cartoons. ;) I know it's not funny to you, but I had to smile at the "where?" comment in reference to the throw-up announcement. Every mom's worst nightmare. :s

  22. I hate to laugh cause it sounds like you had a rotten night and terrible morning but I couldn't help myself. Partly because I can empathize! I've only got two so can't imagine how it's going to be when we keep adding to the chaos. Thanks for sharing. Hope your day goes better!

  23. Oh my! I need a nap after reading your post. It is refreshing that you can keep your sense of humor in the Midsts of it all.

  25. I just HAD to pipe in here and say that I can so so so totally relate!! =) I have 7 ages 11, 9, 8, 6, 4, 2, and 1 - all mine & DH's. I just started laughing when you were talking about the chaos that followed the baby organizing your pantry around you. LOL.

And of course, the icing on the cake was your carefully planned out healthy breakfast, which instead turned into a piece of cake. I'm glad I'm not the only one who eats dessert for breakfast sometimes.

And of course the 8 year old....ROFL...don't we know that the world revolves around them? Duh Mom!

I hope your day turns out to be much better than it's start...thank goodness we know that each day is different...no 2 days are alike! =)

I love your blog and read it every time you post - thanks for keeping it real!

    ReplyDelete
  30. that totally wore me out just reading that. I will now never complain of the chaos my 3 give me- i do not know how you do it with 5! and you had me at the throw up part- my WORST fear- hate that stuff- I would have laid in bed the rest of the night worrying about who would "catch" it next and how fast would it run through our family. LOL
Hope your day and week go much smoother!

  33. I'm sorry, I'm laughing. I think we have all had some kind of day like that. I say eat cake. Not just for breakfast. You need it!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Oh my. It's as if you're starring in a hilarious sitcom.

Order pizza and turn in early. Forget the diet. It sounds as if you need all of those calories to keep up with your family.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Isn't that how it goes? What a night! At least you got it all grouped into one evening. The day can only get better and your goals are within reach. Hang in there! We're all rowing in the same boat! Blessings to you!

  36. Thanks for the laugh...and only laughing, because I can relate!! We've all been there as mother's. Loved the chocolate cake ending...there is nothing wrong with cake for breakfast, lunch or dinner!! You're an awesome mama...and I miss your family!

  38. Sounds pretty typical in the World of Mommydom. Nothing ever goes as planned! However, the humor and grace with which it is handled is what makes you awesome. Thanks for "keeping it real"!

  39. I understand completely! We were just at the doctor this morning..our appointment was at 9:45a.m. didn't actual see a doctor until 11:00. Son broke his arm..his writing arm..so much for drum lessons, school work, etc. Then the cast guy asked me what I did for a living and replied that I was a stay at home mom and he said "hmm..I guess that is a full time job!" (sarcastly) I wanted to ring his neck! UGH!! So sorry about your day..hope it gets better.

  42. Oh, honey. I know. We all know exactly what you're talking about. Some days are just Murphy's Law days, aren't they? Thank God, they pass. But oh, dear Lord, let them pass quickly. And a little extra grace, please. Amen.

  44. Lol!!!! I feel SO BAD laughing at your expense but your re-cap was awesome!! What a TERRIBLE morning!!! I so hope your day got better and things have settled down. Those kind of nights- and mornings are the absolute worst. After that kind of start to your day you definitely deserve cake for breakfast- the diet can start tomorrow!

  46. Wow, sounds like some of my past nights/ mornings! :) I fell out laughing on the throwing up part, well, not the getting sick part but I've asked the same thing, where????LOLOLOL Sending you a virtual hug!!! It is times like these that we love our kids/life and chocolate cake but also wonder just how much Benadryl we can give them to "help" them sleep...Ok, ok, kidding. Take care and there are many women out here supporting you and appreciate all you do.

  47. Melissa, I can't stop laughing and crying. Lately I feel like I barely keep things together with my two young daughters. My heart goes out to you and I hope your day got better. Thank you for sharing and helping other moms realize and remember that we are all going through the same things. And we are not alone. :)

  52. I'm am truly sorry for you, this is a rotten way to start any day, but especially a Monday. Think about what a good parent you are - even as hard as all of this is, you're still loving on your babies. Soon they'll be all better and the chaos will be a distant memory.

  53. Oh, we have had days similar. I am so glad you are keeping your chin up. My friend once told me her husband starts singing that country song, "You're Gonna Miss This.." during times like these. As a mother of six, quickly growing children, I can testify these days are hard, but you will look back with fondness. You are a great mother. Don't forget to laugh! Thanks for sharing.

  54. Thank God for the puke in the toliet is all I can say. :)

  60. Thank you Thank you THANK YOU for this post! I needed to hear this, because this is my life on a weekly basis! You probably handle it much better than I do. My fuse is pretty short when I am running on less than 5 hours of sleep. We need to talk on a more regular basis! LOL! LOVE YOU!
