thrifty treasures 2.22.11

22 February 2011

I have had a thrifting dry spell.
Like….nothing. Dry as dirt. Nada.
And then bam! Thursday was jackpot. I hit 2 Goodwills and scored! Maybe these are all from one person dropping stuff off…who knows??
4 of these chairs, $3.99 each (I don’t understand our goodwill’s pricing. Some trashy things are like $99 and these were $4??) Two will go in the entryway, two in my daughter’s room…more on that later.

I’ve been collecting lots of various picture frames with mats for a future project…February 2011 054 1
Then, I did some clothes shopping. A corduroy skirt ($3.50) with a cute pin from Michael’s dollar section. The skirt is perfect to finish off winter months, the pin is to welcome spring!February 2011 030 1

Light blue Old Navy pants $3.00 February 2011 038 1
Green corduroy blazer $3.00February 2011 042 1
Kenneth Cole leather boots $4.00  February 2011 045 1

Banana Republic skirt $3.50February 2011 051 1
Liz Claiborne polka dot skirt $3.50February 2011 052 1 I’m telling you..if you go thrifting 3 or 4 times and strike out, give it another try. You just never know…
Do you have thrifting dry spells or do you find something every time?

  1. I don't find stuff every time. I just keep going back every so often until I find something good. :) You scored this time! I love all of the clothes you got. Wow!

  2. I LOVE ur finds ... and the chair legs are AwEsOmE!!! I can't figure out the pricing at Goodwill for the life of me either. And as far as hitting it just right ... it seems to be feast or famine. I either walk out empty handed .... or digging for more cash in the endless pit of my purse because me-cart is overfloweth!

  6. I love thrifting! My secret is to go often, early in the morning, and on consistent days (usually the special sale day). I admit, I have expensive taste but not enough cash, so thrifting is the perfect fit for me. I simply walk the aisles touching the fabric and only stop to look at something if it really catches my eye. Usually what catches my eye is something from Gap, Banana Republic or some other expensive brand. They tend to use much nicer designs, fabrics and prints, so they are easy to spot. Just last week I bought a Gap cashmere scarf for $1.99, a darling (and brand new w/tags) le sport sac purse for $1.00 and a pair of Ecco shoes (also brand new) for $2.50. Honestly, all my best shopping finds are from thrift stores! I've seen how they price things, and I think it is quite arbitrary. It all depends on how savvy the employee assigned to pricing is. Most of them seem quite overworked/underpaid and are just glad to get rid of stuff, so if there is no price on something, they will almost always give you a deal. However, Savers seems quite scientific in their pricing, though the smaller neighborhood Salvation Army near me seems to price on a whim. They don't always recognize the really expensive brands or the potential in vintage furniture, so I've really lucked out! Thanks for sharing your amazing finds, Melissa! Inspired me to make a visit to my thrift store this morning!

  10. I have thrifting dry spells all of the time!!! In the warmer months, i go to the flea market, and they have lots of stuff...but every week is different. I really do LOVE the HUNT! There are days i find EVERYTHING...and days i leave completely empty handed. But, i am always satisfied. The hunt makes everything so much more worth while in the end, in my opinion.

  11. This is going to sound totally corny, but this is usually how it goes down for me. If I walk in with out getting a cart right as I walk in, I find loads of stuff! Too much to carry. If I walk in optimisticly and get a shopping cart right off the bat, it's usually a low. This weekend I did score a pair of AT Loft denim capris (12.99) & a great pair of AT Loft blue jeans in a trouser style (my favorite cut - 7.99). I found it weird I paid more for the capri, especially since they were the same brand. I have alsonoticed the prices seem higher than last year. In the end it was still better than retail & it all evened out, + I had my 20% off coupon.

I also think that donations slow down in January and February for those last minute people who itemize their taxes and donate everything right on December 31st so they can get the $500 write-off. Then they won't have other items to donate for a few months...

  13. Ahhhh.... YES.... I do have dry spells.... So frustrating. I've taken valuable time out of my day and come home empty handed..... Some times are just better than others. :-)

Love the bonanza you found this time! Whoooopeee....and good for you.

    Warm blessings,
    Spencer
