Here is a little project we’re working on in the playroom as you come down the stairs. My parents came out to visit and like a kind, sweet daughter, I put my dad to work. My husband, him, and me all helped with this one. Remember these alphabet letters I picked up at a yard sale (.25 for the whole set!) back in Texas? 
We just spray painted some very thin trim in my fav Rustoleum Colonial Red and finally got to use my $50 Black Friday nail gun to attach it! We nailed up the trim and then glued the letters to the wall. That door you see is to the playroom closet. Much more on that later….

I’ve still got to come up with something to put between the numbers and letters…we had to leave a space to make the corner work right. Any thoughts??

For what you can see, we went with soft, fluffy carpet that looks like dirt.

ReplyDeleteIt is looking fantastic. Love the new doors! For the empty spot, well, A is for apples! Maybe a picture of a shiny red apple. Or a picture of an old red school house.

and i ALWAYS put my dad to work when he comes too. switching out electrical sockets, hanging curtain rods, etc. maybe someday i'll convince him to stay long enough to finish my basement... we would both enjoy that one!

ReplyDeleteSoft carpet that looks like dirt is what's in our basement. Had to be carpet because of the sound needs in our media room. . . and if it has to be carpet, it needs to look like dirt!!
I love the letters. You could do a picture of "Dick and Jane and Spot" on their way to school, or an old red schoolhouse, or an apple as someone suggested. . . .

ReplyDeleteLove the idea! I was thinking about how when I was little, the teacher would put a gold star on my paper when I was learning to write. What about one of the metal stars I see at places like Michael's, Hobby Lobby, etc. I thought it would tie in perfectly if you are able to find the right size.

I like the idea of a clock if you could find the right shape, or perhaps you can find a flag or a school house like mentioned on the web and print it off and cut it to size. Whatever you come up with be perfect!

ReplyDeleteto fill the blank space you could take the numbers 1 and 0 to the copy store and color copy them onto cardstock to make the number 10. It might not fill the entire space but it would be a way to finish it off a little bit more. Looks like it will be a ton of fun down there!!!

ReplyDeleteSeeing your basement re-do brings back memories of re-doing mine when my girls were little. They are all grown now and I wrote a post about a table that my girls bought at a neighborhood yard sale that ended up being the highlight of the basement. Making the basement the kids place was the best home improvement project we did - it was great for their teenage years!!! For your empty space, why not find a chalkboard and make a clock out of it. You can buy a kit at a craft store. You could paint on the numbers. It will be a classic element even as your kids get older while serving a purpose, too.

I think a cute picture of an apple would look good there. Kinda reminds me of school and bringing an apple for the teacher.
ReplyDeleteI did the alphabet in my playroom at it was offset a bit, so I needed something at the beginning. I grabbed a fake apple that I had in a bowl in my kitchen, sawed it in half & put it on the wall. I love the 3D look & I think ABC's & Apples go hand in hand:) I also think a cute star would look good there.
ReplyDeleteWhen I stenciled the alphabet in my kids' playroom I used their handprints and dated below the handprint. Their little handprints served as a divider/spacer between my set of letters and numbers I had stenciled. I had about 4 spaces so I had enough for my two kiddos to each to their hand print twice. You could have your kids do their handprints on paper and then place them up!
