tidbits 4.10.12

10 April 2012

Hello! We are coming off of spring break/Easter weekend and it is hitting hard. It was such a nice break, and I’m slowly trying to get back into things. A few tidbits from the past few weeks:
Lots of hard boiled egg sandwiches around here!april 2011 184 1april 2012 022 1

We have the nicest garbage man in the world. The boys are usually asleep when he comes for recycling in the morning, but get to watch the garbage on Tuesday afternoons. This is what he left for my boys for Easter:

Lauren called everyone out one night to see Venus near the moon. So beautiful! And I’m so glad that she’s in astronomy and knows that because I didn’t!march 2012 006 1
Forsythia, forsythia, forsythia. I will never think of you the same after watching Contagion. Kind of a weird movie?march 2012 286 1
My boys watch the older kids every single morning get on the yellow school bus. The bus driver said we could ride anytime, so we did on Friday morning. Who needs Disneyland??march 2012 277 1
We made these and they are soooo good. april 2012 011 1
We switched out winter clothes and moved up sizes. a Landon came running out with his “new” outfit. He kept jumping up and down saying, “I got new clothes! I got new clothes!” I asked his sisters if they took note of how darn excited he was about hand me downs.april 2012 003 1
I sold a bunch of stuff on Craigslist. We sold our dryer because we just don’t use it downstairs. I thought it would be a good idea to have a set up and a set down, but I think it’s just easier to have one central one.  Anyway, I sold it for $50 and the lady called back and said it didn’t work. We had moved it up into the garage, so she couldn’t test it out. *sigh* I gave her money back and just had her keep the dryer because we wanted to get rid of it. Has that ever happened to you? I have a love/hate relationship with Craigslist.april craigslist 002
There is lots of awesome-ness I am still going through from last week’s Under $10 Under 1 Hour party! I’ll share some favorites later this week. Please keep one of my favorite bloggers, Joy in your prayers. Do you remember when she wrote this beautiful guest post a few years ago for us? We love you, Joy.

  1. That stinks about your dryer. One time, we sold a car on CL and the alternator went out on the guy on his way home...said he had to hold a flash light out the window to see. Yikes! Of course, we had no idea and paid for the new part.

  2. I enjoyed reading your tidbits, Melissa! I agree your garbage man was so sweet to leave that for your boys. My son is a car rider, but when he was in first grade he was like your boys and very excited to ride the yellow bus. One day when I went to pick him up after school, one of the aides informed me that he tried to go home on one of the buses. Luckily the bus driver didn't recognize him from her route.

  3. I LOVE Craigslist and have furnished most of my home on a dime by using it.  But you have to be prepared to handle some lemons every now and again.  I had an experience very similar to yours a couple of years ago when we sold my husband's old TV with built in VCR when we got married. It was an old box, but still worked. The buyer emailed me a NASTY NASTY email about how it broke when she tried to screw in the cable (who knows if she did it correctly, it wasn't broken when we sold it) and called me all kinds of nasty dishonest names. It literally made me cry and feel so bad, so my husband called them to work out the exchange back (I wasn't going to let her keep it, since it still worked for what she wanted it to, she just flew off the handle about the other little piece).  Her husband apologized like crazy, saying that his wife had had a bad week and this just set her off, he didn't know why, it wasn't that big of deal.  We turned around and sold it to someone else for just a little less, being upfront about the broken piece and they were very happy with it. Some people are just nasty.

  4. What a thoughtful garbage man you have!  Looks like you all had a wonderful productive week.  Praying for Joy and her family.  Such a tragic loss.

  6. Craigslist.  Sigh.  I'm having the same mixed feelings.  We're in the middle of a big cross-country move, going from a big mid-western house to what will surely be a small California house.  Obviously, we're going to need to lean down, and I've been putting things on Craigslist.  A few things have sold just fine, but I've had my fair share of people trying to pull scams and people who get upset that I won't drop the price by 75%, as well as a couple really creepy calls.  It's getting to be more trouble than it is worth.  I'm almost to the point now where I'm just going to move everything and have a huge garage sale once I figure out what won't fit.

I agree, I think you can get a little more $$ on craigslist, but it is a pain. I try to stick to emails with craigslist and weed through them, but then you have to coordinate meeting times, etc. Yard sales are alot of work, but you get it done in one pop.
