mudroom + easy hat organization

17 June 2014

‘Tis the season for baseball hats to be everywhere around our house! We’ve got 4 different baseball teams we’re chasing until the end of June. Hats were all over the floor, the counter, the mudroom bench, speaking of which—here it is! We’re adding a bunch of high and low hooks and baskets for everything, but it’s fun to look at it in our pre-move in clean and white state. Remember when we discussed mudrooms here?
Anyway, I needed a hat intervention quickly and with as little money as possible.

The beauty of unpacking is that you get to remember EVERYTHING you have. And subsequently question why on earth you have it all?? But then times like these when you want a quick solution you are love that you have riktig clips from IKEA (they are only $2.99 a pack, but if you don’t have an Ikea – you can find them here) and some ribbon that will fit the bill.

easy hat hanging organization
I thumbtacked the ribbon to the top of the door (it is a metal/fiberglass door and they usually have a strip of wood at the top)
Then, tied a square knot around a clip and bent the hanger so it wouldn’t come off, and kept doing that down the ribbon using the baseball caps to get the correct spacing.
clips to hold hats
And there we go! A place for them. Even if they don’t remember to clip them up every time they come in, at least they have a home for the person that gets tidy mudroom on the job chart after dinner. Or when I’m Miss Hannigan and ranting that this place is a mess and no one is playing with anyone or going anywhere until it is CLEAN.

It’s amazing how satisfying it can be to come up with a solution that doesn’t send you traipsing off to a million different stores or spending a fortune. Have you come up with a solution for storing/organizing hats?\

  1. Love that idea! There is no way my teens would clip them though. It would be me doing it all the time lol. I have a large plastic drinks tub in the hall closet that ball caps get tossed into and special hats are on peg hooks in each of the boys' rooms.

  2. Great idea! I love your mudroom. Can't wait to find out what colors you used in your house. It doesn't look like the Kilm you've used before.

  4. Melissa, is this your mudroom?? Oh, my word, girl--it's beautiful!

I wish I could just come to your house and see everything in real life. I'd hang up hats, unpack boxes, sweep floors, polish windows--anything! Just wish I could hang out with you. :)

    Love you, friend!

  6. I laughed out loud at the Miss Hannigan reference! My boys would never actually clip their hats on this but it's a great idea! I also need storage for the other, often found in not appropriate places, baseball attire.

  7. Can you tell me where you got that magazine rack in your mudroom (by the door)? I'm looking for one just like it.

I love the hat storage idea too!
