We love seasonal books, especially on such a fun holiday for kids. We have collected dozens over the years, here are our favorites:
1. Witches Four by Marc Brown
. My mom used to read this to us -- LOVE it.
They brush their teeth with spider paste, they eat bat wing sandwiches, they like the taste. Do you recognize Marc Brown? He is the author/illustrator of the Arthur book series.
2. Too Many Pumpkins - Linda White & Megan Lloyd
-- Rebecca Estelle hates pumpkins, but she makes the best of things when they overtake her yard. This has classic New England countryside illustrations -- I love it.
3. The Littlest Pumpkin R.A. Herman and Betina Ogden
-- all of the pumpkins get chosen at the farmstand except one. A sweet story of a pumpkin’s dream coming true. Now we all feel sorry for pumpkins left on Halloween night.
4. It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown: With Sound and Music
-- is has the actual sounds and voices from the movie, my mom gave it to us and they push them over and over…if you are a fan of the movie, you’ll love it.
5. The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything by Megan Lloyd -- classic and just scary enough. I love how she takes something that scares her and puts it to good use.
6.The Halloween Play by Felicia Bond -- I don’t see this one around anymore, but my kids LOVE it. Sweet, simple but so cute and funny. This is the same author/illustrator that does the If you give your mouse a cookie series.
7. Franklin's Halloween by Paulette Bourgeois and Brenda Clark
-- I don’t know what it is about this one, but we all love it. The getting ready, the party, the “mystery” and kindess for a friend.
And this last one isn't really a book, but my Grandma had one -- does anyone remember these Hallmark pop up Halloween houses? They are going for a cool $100 on Ebay, I hope to find one randomly at a yard sale one day:
We are always on the lookout for good books to add to our collection. Please tell us your favorites!

i love childrens halloween books! there's one called popcorn, by frank asch, about a little bear whose parents go to a halloween party and he has friends over. they pop too much popcorn and it comes out the doors and windows and then they're sick from eating it all. i scour flea markets and library sales for this book, but i haven't found it, and i am too cheap to buy it on ebay for 45 bucks. sigh. happy (early) halloween!

absolutely love your book round ups for kids, Melissa! We bought Santa Mouse from your Christmas list and its one of our new favorites! I especially love seeing some of the out of print titles that are a little harder to find. These posts always feel like your authentic favorites - really appreciate that!
ReplyDeleteI love the branches! Sometimes you have to stop thinking about the better deal or you'll go nuts.
ReplyDeleteI wanted to know if you are still finding great thrift shop/garage sale finds now that you live in Utah?
Is this the one? Amazon has it for $6 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1442466634/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=1442466634&linkCode=as2&tag=320sycamore-20&linkId=2KZYY2ZIKLW7NV76 Sounds so cute!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Chris! We love Santa Mouse ♥
ReplyDeleteYes! There are great finds here, except I do find that they seem more expensive. I need to do a thrifty treasures post soon...
ReplyDeleteWhat a great list! We love The Biggest Pumpkin Ever by Steven Kroll and The Trouble With Mom by Babette Cole
ReplyDeleteWe love room on the broom!
ReplyDeleteBig Pumpkin by Erica Silverman. Its a great book about working together and sharing in the rewards of it!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE Halloween!! We started a collection right after my second child was born and now our Halloween/Fall book collection is nearly as large as our Christmas one :) We have The Halloween Play and The Littlest Pumpkin and love them but I've never seen Witches Four. We are huge Marc Brown fans--I'm excited to get it! Our favorites are Room on the Broom, Skeleton Hiccups (my 7 year old's favorite!), Miss Fiona's Stupendous Pumpkin Pies and of course The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything--but HANDS DOWN, the most favorite Halloween book, especially for the girls in my family is a little book called Humbug Witch. It came out in 1965 and was out of print for awhile but came back about 10 years ago--check it out on Amazon, it is absolutely precious and I promise you will not be disappointed! SO darling. Also wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your blog and express gratitude for how "real" you are. I have never, not even once, left your blog and felt unhappy or inferior. You inspire and uplift and make me wish I could know you in person (not to mention the fact that I too believe that IAWL is the greatest movie to have ever been made :) Happy Halloween!
