The white board on the left wall was from a yard sale~it was $5 for the board, the markers, and the eraser. Wahoo! I would love to frame it out in chunky red moulding, but that’s so far down on the list, it will probably never happen! We love to use it for phone messages and grocery lists (and to take down to use for playing school)

We found the lantern from Amazon for $35. It’s meant to be outdoor, but I was assured that it’s perfectly safe to bring outdoor fixtures inside. I thought it was a fantastic price + I got to order it in my jammies without having to drag any kids out shopping. Worth every penny.

The BE KIND sign is just another version of the dollar tree one here.

The previous owners’ had painted the garage door hinges white, so I just went with it and spray painted the hinges on the door to the basement white. It doesn’t look bad at all, but I haven’t decided if we should do it in the rest of the house yet. It’s so nice not having to take the whole blasted door down…

I also spray painted the door knobs with primer and oil rubbed bronze. It’s an experiment for the rest of the house, I’ll let you know how they hold up. Have any of you spray painted doorknobs with any luck??

The paint color. I am so sorry to tell you I don’t have a name. It was a mixture of 2 oops paint cans from HDepot, plus some white primer. I’m heading back there this week and I’ll see if they can color match it and get a formula for you.

Here is the cost breakdown:
Whiteboard: $5

Paint, spray paint, & supplies for all projects: $50 (this was more expensive because we just moved and I had to buy everything new. I’ll have them leftover for future projects though..)

Total Cost: $197

Am I leaving anything out? If you have any more questions, feel free to ask in the comments…

Happy Wednesday!

  1. I would also like to know how the spray paint primer and paint work out for the door knobs. I've thought about it and it would be so much cheaper than swapping them all out.

  6. I spray painted the door handle in my powder with cheap white spray paint last year and it's holding up pretty well. I didn't use anything but spray paint. I don't think the handle gets as much use as an entryway door though.

I love the lantern. It's fab!

  7. Melissa it looks unbelievable! Come visit my house and make it over anytime you want!

LOL at not buying the light if you can't afford it or if husbands will email you. :)

  8. I still think you are a genius for cutting that table in half to make benches! When I saw your post about cutting the table, I knew that is what you were going to do. I wish I had a spot in my house to do this. Love it all!

  9. Everything looks great! Did you spray paint the hinges and knobs/hardware while still on the door? This is a great budget friendly way to keep what you have but change the look!

  11. I spray painted all the knobs on our kitchen cabinets about 2 years ago. So far, most have held up really well. There are a couple that have peeled but they tended to be where I got a big drip of spray paint or put them back on the doors too soon... but yes, the vast majority have held up surprisingly well. (I used a paint from HD that was supposed to give an aged bronze effect. I can't remember the brand but it was a little more expensive as spray paint goes. About $7 or 8, I think.)

  12. I honestly love everything about the space. I'm going to try the bronze pain on my brass stuff - fingers crossed it works.

  13. Love it! Love the color and the bench. Such a great idea.

Can you tell us the name/codes of the HD oops paint?

  14. Last fall I spray painted all the door knobs in my house with primer and the same spray paint you used and it's held up just fine. I also sprayed on a clear top coat too. I think it really changes the look of my house!

  15. I am also interested to hear how the spray painted knobs turn out. Love your blog!

  16. Nice entry, so tidy & organized. What do you put in all those baskets?

    ReplyDelete
  17. I truly love your entry. It makes it even better by how cheap it was!!

  18. oh thanks for sharing the specifics. .I have painted the brass colored hinges on my doors white with white trim paint which is a pain as it takes lots of coats. . never thought to use spray paint. . mmm. . gonna do that to rest of house. . I think it just makes the hinges blend in and it is so much cheaper than swapping them out. Plus once you take the door down, you can never get it back just right. Thanks for sharing!!

  21. Hmm, I would love to know how the knobs hold up. I bet if you spray them with a clear sealant then they would really last.

  22. I spray painted our knobs with the textured hammered paint and they have held up wonderfully! Didn't even use a primer. Your entryway is beautiful and inspirational.

  23. We spray painted the old doorknobs in our old house...can't remember the paint we used, but not cheap stuff. Anyway, it did not hold up, after about a year, little paint chips started coming off on your hand. I had to remove them and strip them down to make sure the kiddos didn't ingest paint chips. I hope yours hold up better:-)

  24. oh my gold swirly doorknobs are getting sprayed soon! I would have never thought of that! Hope it works! Thanks!

  25. I've had great luck so far with my spray painted doorknobs. One is on the pantry door and w/ 3 boys it gets A LOT of use ;)

  26. Your entry looks fabulous! I can't wait to hear how the door knobs hold up. Our house has gold door knobs throughout... I would love to be able to paint them instead of replace them.

  27. I am wondering how the door knobs are going to hold up too. I love me some spray paint!

The area looks great. You did a good job on it. It is a happy space:)

  28. I will keep you posted on the doorknob progress!
I didn't even think of using a clear coat on top of them! I think that would greatly improve the chances of them surviving in this house...

June ~ Yes, I just sprayed them right on the door. I taped up some newspaper to protect the wall next to it and went to town. It really is so much better than taking the whole door down.

Laura~right now, there are hats, gloves, mittens, an umbrella, baseball hats, gloves, shin guards, stuff I need to return to Target, a rain poncho for my daughter's field trips, etc. I love baskets...

  29. Celia~ I took the sample to Lowes with me today and got a formula! I will take a pic and post it soon.

  30. I love this! It just looks so good and yet- you did stuff that anyone could do! I wish I could be half as creative as you are! What a fabulous place to take your shoes off and have organized!

  32. We bought a house from a lady that painted the doornobs. Some have held up better than others but they definitley look painted. She didn't take the time to do the hinges either which makes them look mismatched.

  33. Love the color on the walls, it is very soothing.

  34. Growing up, my mom LOVED painting anything and everything in the house--including the door knobs. She lived in that house 35 years after painting those knobs and they were still OK when she sold it.

  35. Melissa, everything looks beautiful!

I'm glad to hear about everyone's experiences with the doorknobs. I actually had bought spray paint for a lock we couldn't replace in our new house, and was toying with the idea of spraying the brass doorknobs too.

We miss you guys - hope you're loving your new home! :)

  38. I am obsessed with Oil rubbed bronze and decorate with this color all over the house. Anything Iron and I've got to have it, but on a budget mind you ;) ! You are a lifesaver, I've been looking all over for this color in spray paint. Where did you find it!? Thanks!! LOVE YOU BLOG!!

  39. Graciously Southern~ I buy mine at Walmart. Good luck!

  40. I just love the color on the walls of your entryway. Could you please give me the color and brand? Thanks!

  43. how have the doorknobs held up over the past few years? I'm contemplating doing ours but haven't made the plunge yet as we'd need to take them all off and do the hinges as well - a HUGE undertaking! :)
