Floyd, VA

24 August 2011

The kids and I took one more little day trip before school started: to Floyd, VA! I had heard lots of about Schoolhouse Fabrics and wanted to check it out. It’s an old schoolhouse they have made into a huge fabric shop.august 2011 001 1

I have a little boy that is obsessed with kitties and really wanted his own kitty blanket. There was a whole row of cat fabric. We got some fabric for Hailey’s curtains too…I hope it works. (ahem…NOT in the kitty print)

On the way down to Main Street, I bribed my 11 year old to play with the kids for 5 minutes while I darted in this little gem (kids & antique stores = do not mix)august 2011 008 1   I managed to find a couple of little treasures for the kitchen:august 2011 003 1august 2011 007 1

and then to our FAVORITE:

It’s over 100 years old and still is the coolest store around. We stopped for some ice cream and had to pick a few treats from the candy barrels:

I was dying at the schoolhouse lights and ceiling. Every Friday night they have local bands play…I so want to come back for a date night sometime!august 2011 024 1 and fun finds everywhere:august 2011 019 1

We heart Floyd. It’s just minutes from the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway and one of our favorite little discoveries in VA!

  2. Floyd is great!  Next time you're there, take a jaunt down the the parkway and visit Mabry Mill -- it's so picturesque!  Definitely worth the drive.  The Country Store is our favorite part of Floyd, too.

  4. It looks like you went back in time to go shopping in the 1950's or 1960's!

  6. Floyd looks like a great place to visit. I currently live in Asia (3 years down, 1 to go!) and I dream of having places like this o thrift, antique shop and just browse.

  9. You will have to go back for a friday night! It is the best to see all the oldtimers flat footing it to the fiddle.  I haven't been in a while as I am only home a couple of times throughout the year.  LOVE the schoolhouse fabrics, we used to sit and play in the button bins when we were little and the bins were bigger, that was before Floyd had a stoplight.  :)  It sure has changed a lot since then. Now I must get back when I am home for Thanksgiving, you're making me homesick.

  11. I love small towns that have such cool stores. Hubby and I are looking for one of those amazing towns in central Texas to retire to. Right now we are considering Georgetown, right outside of Austin.

  12. I live in Northern VA & got very excited about this post (I want to go there! I want to go!), but it looks like it's a 5 hour trip :(  I'll have to live vicariously through your post for the time being.

  14. Now you need to take a road trip to North Carolina.  So much to see right here with me. . . the campuses of Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill. . . the Durham Museum of Life and Science. . . the Durham Bulls ballpark. . . Duke Gardens. . . and all of this just half an hour from Raleigh, the state capital.  What do you think?
