It’s totally a first world problem, but it’s got me in a rut for Hailey’s room. She wanted white, gold, and blush in her room and so far it’s working pretty well. We were going to finish it up last week and move on but the curtains are giving me a pain. Here’s the story:
I died over these blush silk shantung panels at Serena & Lily, but there is ONE left and it’s 84” I first saw them at the M Loves M office I shared on Friday – but they are pricey so maybe it’s good they aren’t available. Soooo, we had to find some alternates.
Here are the contenders that were in stock – AND you get a sneak peek of her room!
After our initial online searches, our first pick was this blush linen panel from Target. They are the perfect shade and match the comforter at the end of her bed. The problem is that it only comes in 84” length! Grrrrrr. About a foot short! So I need to add some fabric on the bottom, maybe with a fringe trim of some sort?? But that also means more work. Target…why only 84”?? I was also hoping for some more pattern, the solid linen may be too…solid.
The picture don’t really show how these Target gold metallic stripe look, but they may be a little too light? $22.49/panel 95”
My first impression when I got these Walmart BH&G in the mail was that they may be a little sassy brassy but then I put them up and liked them much better! And they come in 95” $17.97/panel
And then there are the plain white Ikea Vivan panels – too much white? I love the more sheer look on these though. $9.99 for the pair!
What do you think? Do you have a strong, burning opinion?? I’d love to hear! Or seen anything else around that would look fabulous in her room as we’re trying to finish it up?
Styling shelves can be tricky sometimes so today I wanted to share some favorite, inexpensive things I use on shelves, tabletops, and little nooks.
* wooden boxes: think jewelry boxes that would be pretty on a shelf, pretty decorative boxes, even holiday boxes that you could turn around and use all year. Those top ones ^^ actually say home sweet home on the back, but I loved the look on the backside.
* clocks: great on a box or stack of books or get a larger one to make a statement.
* wire baskets: filled with yarn balls or fuzzy balls in the winter or green moss balls in the summer. I often see them in Target dollar spot or at Ross.
* wreaths: this is my $10 Trader Joes one from Christmas that dries beautifully and would work through spring.
* trays: perfect to fill with candles in the winter and nests & greenery in the warmer months. I think the white one on the bottom was an Easter clearance one.
* books! I especially love the look of neutral colored spines/dust jackets.
* lanterns – put candles in them that come on automatically on winter nights or fill with fairy lights (see below) They are perfect to fill with sand or shells in the summer.
* picture frames – fill with favorite family photos or beautiful landscapes of places you’ve lived or visited.
* glass jars: these are filled with scrabble tiles, seeds from an african bean game, and boggle letters.
(fairy lights are perfect for cold winter days & nights)
* globes – I see them in every color and size and am kind of obsessed with them.
* cool rocks: perfect to put on a stack of books, we found a beautiful piece of granite when we were hiking in California.
* a bundle of wood or sticks: tie together with some jute, ribbon, or an old belt
* ceramic bowls: they come in such beautiful patterns and sizes
* candles: come in the prettiest containers now, even if you don’t burn them they make lovely fillers on a shelf.
* greenery: stick a bunch of inexpensive ikea plants in a bowl for more impact
Those are some ideas to get you started, what are your favorite things to display on shelves?
Hello there! We are in the market for some headboards for the guest room and my girls’ rooms and I can’t believe how much prices have gone down since I made our own back in Virginia! It’s almost not worth it to make your own. I was pleasantly surprised, here are some of my favorites at some killer prices – all in queen sizes:
Here is the gallery wall I’ve been working on in our upstairs family room! As you know, they have been on my mind -- we had one in our Virginia home and we kept our favorite elements and brought them with us.
Hello, friends! A big welcome if you are coming from In My Own Style! I am joining some fabulous bloggers this week for “how to decorate” series that Beth is hosting. I still kind of laugh at myself joining things like this because I have no professional qualifications, but I do like to make things look pretty. I wrote a series a few years ago called “putting a room together” which describes my thought process when decorating.
Honestly though? We recently built a new home and I have felt a bit paralyzed. Our previous homes have been dated and pretty darn ugly when we moved in and it right off the bat it was obvious to me what needed to be done. I’ve always worked well with making the best of a not so pretty situation. Now, I’m finding myself beginning with all new AND pretty in a situation we created with our building choices. The goal for me now is to personalize it and add warmth and character and I’m reminding myself of a few basics that I will share with you today:
Summer is kicking my behind in the blogging department. But here I am! We’ve slowly been working on the kids’ bathroom upstairs~here are a few ideas:
*giveaway now closed*
Have you all seen Lisa Leonard’s new decor line over at her shop?
You will fall in love…
I picked out a set of magnets for the side of my fridge to help me keep my wits about me:
1. You have your inspiration
2. You are not afraid to copy
3. You have gathered
4. Now, the hardest part (for me) sometimes is to just
begin.
The room isn’t very pretty. I’ve got an ugly stash in the closet. Motivation is loooow.
(wait! before you do anything…take a before picture. Make it look as ugly as possible :) It will feel so good to compare it to your after)
Soooo, some may call this hoarding, but I prefer the term gathering.
Anyone with money to burn can walk into a showroom and say, “I want this entire room. Have it delivered at 9 a.m. on Thursday. And send in the painters and interior designers as well. I’ll be at the dog spa with Fifi if you need me…”
The rest of us have to be a little more creative and patient as we
gather.

You don’t know what you’re doing?
I’ll let you in on a little secret: neither do I!
I’ve never been to design school. I have no credentials, except that I love seeing potential in spaces and all things “home.” When people ask what I “do,” I always say mom and if my husband is there he may chime in that I have a blog. And then the questions come:
“Oh, what kind of blog?”
It’s a home decor, kind of design on a dime type blog with some other randomness.
“Oh, is that what your degree is in?”
No, my degree is in elementary ed.
Oh….that’s interesting.
I usually go on to say it began in Texas when we had a really ugly house, blah, blah, blah, but it really makes no sense.
I guess my point here is:
fake it until you make it aka copy, copy, copy!

Putting a whole space together can seem very daunting: where on earth do you begin? The first step for me is to
find inspiration.
If you have some vision in mind of what you want your space to end up like, it gives you somewhere to begin.
This is my inspiration notebook I gather treasures from paper sources like magazines or catalogs. It is like a treasure box to me and when I find myself in a funk or not feeling very inspired, chances are a good 15 minutes with this can snap me right back out.
