My reasons for doing it this way:
* I didn’t want to re-wire my can lights that were already above the dining room table, so I got these nickel light converters. Plus, the tops match this schoolhouse light we put above the kitchen sink.
* I really wanted drum shade pendants, but they were too $pendy, so I wanted to come up with a less expensive alternative with fabric I had already picked out.
Here we go!
1. Find a large drum shade with a spider fitting (one that has the three parts that come together in the middle): I found mine on Ebay~they are 17” across and 8” high.
2. Take a hacksaw and saw an opening large enough for your cord to fit through. Or if you have one of those cool Dremel tools, this would take you seconds….
Note: DO NOT go crazy with the hack saw and starting sawing everything and breaking your shade so you have to rig it up with green florist wire….be nice, gentle, and patient.
Lift the decorative silver piece up, then slip the cord into your opening:
This is what it will look like hanging:
For the shade, I gently removed the trim on the top and bottom:
This is what it will look like: the front one is correct, the one in back is rigged up with the florist wire because I hacksawed too much…
Total cost for one drum shade pendant:
Drum shade: $25 (ebay)
fabric: about $8 (this is the Premier Prints ZigZag Village Blue/Natural
Total: about $60
And yes, the cabinets are mostly painted…I’m still touching up and finishing a few things and I promise I’ll show you the whole darn thing!
Happy Friday, everyone~
I really, really wanted some drum shade pendants in the kitchen above the table where there where just 2 can lights previously. The ones I loved, were (of course!) $200 bucks a pop, so of course I turned to diy.
I used the same can converters from this light project and some drum shades that I bought on Ebay.
I wish I could tell you that it was super duper easy,
My mom, Kristin, and I found a great little stack of Golden Books at a yard sale in Montana for 10 cents each. I was thrilled that one of my favorites was in that stack:
Remember this chair from my thrifty treasures back in May? I thought it would be the perfect computer chair for the kitchen, with a little facelift.

My assistants:
3. finish up with a few light coats of spray paint ( the color is Eden from Rustoleum )
4. take the seat off and re-cover with a staple gun. {fabric is from Fabric.com~ it’s called Premier Prints ZigZag Village Blue/Natural}
5. screw the seat back on to the chair
and there you go! a fresh, sassy chair to do my blogging in :)
She will be allowed inside when she’s had a few days to cure and get rid of the spray-painty smell.
It can’t be August already~Rabbit!
Well, hello there! We are on our great road trip traveling across the U.S. to visit/meet up with family in Montana, Canada, and then down to Missouri and Illinois. That means LOTS of quality time in the car, like we’re talking 5,000 miles worth. Let me show you what has been our little saving grace:
I came across this penny tile over a year ago, and fell in love. I was actually thinking of using it for my entire backsplash in my kitchen, but after talking it over with some wise women I decided to just stick with classic white that would allow me to change my mind about color combos in 7 months or 7 years.
So, instead….I decided to tile the back of one of my kitchen cabinets.
I was inspired by this kitchen from Tom Scheerer in House Beautiful that I featured in a Caught My Eye last year.
I wanted something easy and removable in case it turned into a total disaster and a guy at the home store said this stuff should do the trick. It’s called Bondera~basically you just cut it with scissors, peel off the back,
put the sticky side against the wall,
peel off the film to reveal more stickiness
put your sheets of tile (cut them with scissors to the right size around the penny tiles) up onto the sticky mesh side (it totally holds it by itself)
and there.you.go.
I was actually pretty impressed and no, I don’t have any kind of deal with this company, but it’s the fastest tile job I’ve ever done. Let it sit 24 hours, and then you can grout. Now, it is kind of pricey~around $40 a roll (this project took 1 roll exactly) I think? BUT I have seen similar products coming out so prices should actually come down on these…
I almost like it better without the grout!
I’m going back and forth between an open cabinet or glass doors (just on this one middle cabinet)…any opinions?
So thrilled that I got my penny tile! White subway tile on the main backsplash is coming…
Thanks to some wonderful advice from you all in the comments of this post, I lined the back of the fabric in the kitchen with black out material (just hot-glued it on!) and used some ring clips. I love the way they hang and slide back and forth now.
And then, using Kate’s method, I made a faux roman shade to go above the other window. I didn’t have dowel rods, so I just folded and made some stitches by hand to hold everything in place. I used upholstery tacks to pin it up on the wall.
Pretty painless… It’s purely for looks~we have a white roller shade behind it. It’s puckering there on the bottom right because of my rad sewing skills, but I’m okay with it because if everything in the kitchen looks perfect, then all of a sudden the dirty dishes and sticky floor and fingerprints look out of place…
The fabric is called Jayda Bramble from Better Homes and Gardens, and I would say this picture is the most accurate for the colors:
I have another fabric I’m using on some light fixtures…coming soon!

Happy Tuesday~
I have to admit, this nearly perfect summer day almost didn’t happen. We’re getting ready to go on our big trip, my to-do list is a couple pages long, and I was thinking of other things we could do that wouldn’t take as much time and picking up some berries at the Farmer’s Market, but look what we would have missed:

the blueberries were huge and scrumptious this year!
I got hit with a stomach bug on the 3rd. NOT fun. We did manage to drive up and visit with some family, and make some easy strawberries (idea from Pinterest!)
Mornin’!
Just wanted to let you know that my calendar told me to be at Target this morning since the Wednesday after the 4th was when patio went 75% off last year. I love my calendar because there was the sweet lady with the scanning gun marking it just as I showed up at 8:15. Everything at my store wasn’t on clearance, but lots of chairs, gazebos, cushions, bbqs, etc. were.
Call yours to see…I would speak with someone directly back in seasonal. I know many stores are itching to put back to school out. Good luck~we’re off to swimming lessons!
